If you have to have sugar, a modest amount of select fruit should be OK. I would stay away from all refined sugars and from certain fruits such as stone-fruit, bananas, etc. They tend to be a little starchier? The only fruit I can tolerate are lemon, lime, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. I cook pretty regularly with lemons and limes, but very rarely (e.g. couple of times a year) eat berries. I would only eat fruit when they are in season and picked when they were truly ripe. Less likely to be starchy in that case.

I've been more or less on a sugar (including fruit) embargo for quite some time now. I struggled early because I wasn't eating enough non-starchy carbs. Make sure you get enough healthy fats and non-starchy carbs. That was an important lesson for me in my early days of experimenting.
