I realized I should probably also reply to this posting to say that it is not uveitis. I posted separately about this as well. I went to the ophtho yesterday and he did a thorough exam including slit lamp exam and whatnot. It's meibomian gland dysfunction (possibly due to auto-immune issues, but not serious, just uncomfortable and irritating). He poked his finger around (repeatedly!) in my eye to open up my oil (meibomian) glands and said if hot compresses don't take care of it, anti-inflammatory drops will do it. I go back in a month.

Again, I can't say enough thank yous to all who have posted. You are thoughtful, caring, and compassionate bunch, and I feel very lucky to have stumbled upon this site!!
