Well, the post-hurricane hatchlings have arrived! OMG...I walked outside this morning and got mugged by some of the biggest mosquitoes I've ever seen!! We had the same problem in '05, a week to the day after the hurricane, I was outside at around 2 p.m. cleaning up debris and one of my neighbors hollered over at me to take cover, she said that she'd just heard on the radio that a swarm of mosquitoes was heading our way, she no longer got the words out of her mouth when a swarm of mosquitoes so big came through that it almost blocked out the sun! Well, it got hazy anyway, it was unreal! What happens is this, the mosquitoes lay eggs in all the warm water that the storm pushed ashore and that water is absent of it's normal mosquito egg eating predator population and the parish hasn't been out spraying either, so this unbelievable mass of eggs hatch but there's nothing for the mosquitoes to eat, so they head north in search of food, it's a sight to see, but this time, they invaded in the still of the night! I heard on the 6:00 news that they're going to send out the planes as soon as the sun comes up to spray the little monsters...
