What's the best and safest NSAID? I take Duexis and sometimes I get palpitations and sometimes i don't...so confuse.

Anyone take this drug?

Duexis (ibuprofen and famotidine) is a NSAID that I have not been on. I have been on slow release Indomethacin for many years and it suits me as well as any. Whenever I have tried some other NSAID I always end up back on the Indomethacin.

There are many different NSAIDs. someone once told me this is often the way of it when there is no actual cure for a disease as the drug companies come up with all sort of medication just for the sake of their profit margins.

With so many different NSAIDs. you may need to try several before you find the one that works best for you as what works for one may not work for all.

Yea, my rehum says indomethacin is not a good drug and he won't prescribe it. I'm not sure how to go about this.

I think everyone is different.

Here is a summary of how the various NSAIDs affect me:

Cox2 Inhibitors (Vioxx, Bextra) (2000-2002, effective, gastritis, edema)
Cox2 Inhibitors (Celebrex) (2000, made me loopy in the head)

NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) (1998, 2009, effective, gastritis, edema)
NSAIDs (salsalate, trilisate) (2009, not very effective, gastritis)
NSAIDs (mobic, relafen, daypro) (sept 2010-apr 2011), not very effective)
mobic made me loopy in the head
NSAID (ketoprofen, ER) (fall 2010, effective, gastritis)

I use Aleve (naproxen) now when I need it. So long as I take it 12 hours apart just for few days or once a day for almost a week, the gastritis isn't too bad and the edema doesn't creep in, at least to a noticeable amount.

The only class of NSAIDs that I haven't tried orally is dichlofenac, but it is the active ingredient of flexor patches, which I wear over my SI joint every day...even now on LDN and Humira, I find my SI joint needs that extra bit of help. Topically it seems to work locally without giving me any systemic side effects.

NSAIDs. are notorious for causing stomach problems. There are however various medications you can take to alleviate such problems. I take Lansoprazole and it seems to have solved the stomach problems I used to get. Other such drugs are available such as omeprazole pantoprazole (Protonix)

Hi Sue,

You are on Humira and also take LDN. Do you take methotrexate. Can one take LDN & MTX concurrently.

Regards.

The only one that worked well for me, Mobic, was d/c'd last year because my creatinine went higher than the rheumy liked (1.22 at the highest level). Other ones I tried bothered my stomach or didn't work. I'll take OTC stuff on occasion, but nothing really helps much. I've got PsA, rather than AS, but still taking MTX. Had to stop the biologic last year, too. Hoping to get back to one after being released from care for a foot fracture that is taking an eternity to heal (6 months next week)!

DX: Psoriatic Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Psoriasis
Meds: MTX since Oct 2009, 15mg/week. Cimzia-restarted after 2 yrs away.

SIJ Steroid Injection x3; Bilateral Radiofreq Ablation SIJ x9

But be careful...the first rheumy who tried to push NSAIDs on me, insisted on a "stomach protector"...when I told him I took Prilosec every day since 1993, he just told me to take more Prilosec....I couldn't do that...more drugs, more side effects.

So yes, the Prilosec does help, but it doesn't solve the problem completely.

I've never been on MTX, so I don't know?

But the LDN and Humira seem to be OK together. I think the LDN may help keep my immune system healthy so Humira doesn't take it down too much, just the part its supposed to. I think they work on different aspects of the immune system and that's why I can take both.

Of course I've never done the experiment of just Humira. I hate to change things when they seem to be working.
