Hi Everyone,

This will be our first Thanksgiving on NSD and I need to make a plan so there will be something on that table my husband can eat besides turkey! We are going to my parents' so I need to bring some safe food for him. Nearly every side dish traditionally is a starch. We often have Brussels sprouts on T-Day, but since going NSD I always make him Brussels sprouts so want to try something different. I know this is an American holiday, but I'd love to hear everyone's ideas. What NSD side dishes do you have on your table?

Mary

Husband diagnosed with AS in '92. Enbrel appx 2011- March 2013 when ER doctor temporarily terminated. Grateful to have finally found Kickas in April 2013 and NSD since May 2013. Since NSD no need to resume Enbrel. Enbrel only helped hip pain, did not touch chest pain. Since NSD, both hip and chest pain have improved. Still takes pain and other pills daily, but far fewer.

Hi Mary! I'm new posting on the board, but for my daughter who is LSD I'm planning:

Turkey
Mock potatoes (mashed cauliflower)
Fresh cranberry chutney (it's made from fresh cranberries, orange zest, apples, honey and nuts)
Asparagus oven roasted in sea salt and coconut oil
Deviled eggs
Creamy Broccoli salad w/bacon and raisins

And I'm going to try a recipe I saw in a Food Network magazine for a flourless walnut torte/cake for her dessert. Of course, I may change my mind and just do an apple crumble using almond and coconut flour for the topping, since she'll already be getting a fair amount of starch compared to our regular daily level. Oh, and I always have a fresh tossed salad ready to go with homemade honey mustard dressing. She shouldn't be able to walk after we eat.

How low does your husband have to be to avoid a flare? I would think if he can tolerate brussel sprouts that maybe a nice fresh slaw, with cabbage or broccoli would be a nice change if he can eat them?

Yum Karen! Those are all fabulous side dishes! Mine are pretty similar. And a homemade honey mustard dressing is a staple around my house also!

I will be making:

Mashed Kohlrabi (or Cauliflower Mash)
Creamy Herb Mushroom Gravy
A Green Bean Casserole, using my mushroom gravy instead of Campbells Cream of Mushroom **There is some starch in green beans, but I enjoy them on occasion
Raw Rosemary Fig Walnut Apple Pie w/ Coconut Milk Vanilla Ice Cream
Almond Flour Biscuits
Raw/Vegan Key Lime Pie w/ Vegan Meringue
Raw Pumpkin Pie (starch in pumpkin, but I tolerate a little winter squash on occasion, even more so when raw)
Raw Cranberry Sauce, cranberries blended with medjool dates, made 1 day ahead of time to "set up" into sauce

For Starters:
Macadamia Cream Cheese (vegan)
Roasted Almonds with Rosemary & Sea Salt
Paleo Molasses Ginger Cookies (recipe posted in kickas recipe files)

I also make a raw cabbage slaw that easily works with shaved Brussels Sprouts too, and a toasted sesame Asian vinaigrette, with dried cranberries & toasted hazelnuts.

Note: I LOVE roasted Brussels Sprouts, but they did turn quite black when tested with iodine, so they are usually pretty starchy, so I just eat them on occasion now.

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Haven't made this recipe yet to test it, but looks like a good approach to a low/no starch "Thanksgiving Bread" that replaces stuffing, and can be used for leftover Thanksgiving sandwiches. http://myheartbeets.com/thanksgiving-bread/

I am in the midst of cracking the code for the perfect baked, not fried, "apple cider donuts" paleo, no starch, grain free, will post recipe when I have it perfected, but they seem like a great holiday addition too! I made a version of these yesterday, but no find I really want a $20 counter top "donut maker" the kind you plug in like a waffle maker. http://shechoosesjoy.blogspot.com/2012/02/apple-cider-baked-doughnuts.html

Here is a similar donut, but this one needs to be adjust to omit the tapioca flour!! http://paleomg.com/apple-cider-donuts/

Lots of good suggestions. However, I flare every time I eat cauliflower.

I was also thinking of a few other dishes that might be nice for a big holiday dinner.

Like Roasted Red Grapes w/ Roasted Fennel, maybe some walnuts too. Oh, and some kalamata olives too.

Or a Waldorf Salad with similar ingredients, grapes, apples, walnuts, optional meat, in a tangy homemade dressing.

A Wilted Kale Salad in either a tahini garlic sauce, or a macadamia creamy sauce. Can toss in sliced bell peppers, tomatoes (if tolerated) along with pickled red onions, hemp seeds.

A winter fruit salad with slices of grapefruit, persimmons, kiwi, slices of apples or pears, coconut chips, and maybe some pomegranates (pomegranate juice is fine, but seed fiber is starchy), dried cranberries... Can make a simple orange juice based poppy seed dressing too.

A simple macaroon can be nice to have out for a no starch holiday cookie option too. And I promise those ginger molasses cookies I recently posted a recipe for are the BOMB too! Even the starch junkies will like 'em.

Another simple dessert is a fruit crisp. Fill a baking dish with blueberries, top with a mixture of blended walnuts, coconut flakes and dates, sea salt & vanilla, bake for 35 minutes or so. Delicious with homemade coconut ice cream.

Though I don't eat No Starch, and am sure others will correct me if I misspeak, I'll throw out some ideas:

We're gonna have a nice big mixed greens salad.
Often I'll put nuts, goat cheese, tomatoes, other veggies into the salad as well.

If he can eat cauliflower: Cauliflower soup:
chicken broth or veggie broth
onion (saute'd in butter and EVOO or just EVOO)
cauliflower (cut into its florets)
thyme and bay leaf and rosemary
cook about 30 minutes and then puree with hand blender
the recipe also calls for a little milk or cream but I leave that out

brie soup (if one can handle dairy)

mushroom soup (a variety of mushrooms in mushroom broth with green onions and herbs)

stuffed mushrooms

brocoli

cranberry sauce

pecan pie in an almond flour crust

apple crisp with a nut flour, nut toping instead of traditional oatmeal and flour
I make mine with nut flour (usually hazelnut, sometimes almond flour) and oats (gluten free)

baked apples with cinnamon, sugar or honey, nuts (optional)

baked pears

applesauce or pear sauce or both together made with a little apple cider, a little sugar or honey, cinnamon and allspice

maple custards (milk, maple syrup, eggs, nutmeg grated on top): sadly I won't be able to have them this year as I'm allergic to the milk, but may try one or two with nut milk. These are sooo good if you like all things maple.

sue

Spondyloarthropathy, HLAB27 negative
Humira (still methylprednisone for flares, just not as often. Aleve if needed, rarely.)
LDN/zanaflex/flector patches over SI/ice
vits C, D. probiotics. hyaluronic acid. CoQ, Mg, Ca, K.
chiro
walk, bike
no dairy (casein sensitivity), limited eggs, limited yeast (bread)
