I've been assuming that pain would be down to something I'd eaten two days ago, rather than anything more recently than that. Which is a bit problematic. Makes it hard to nail down.

Perhaps it is food allergy if happening this quickly... for it to be related to digestion, would have to wait until food at least gets to the intestines which should not be 15 minutes.

It could easily be a food allergy you have developed to say something like GMO corn or soy.

I now have to watch out for soy in ANYTHING from a restaurant or processed food. That sh@it is hiding in everything now, and I have become totally intolerant of it, even in the slightest dose.

I usually go to great lengths to avoid it at all costs too.

But this reminds me of something that happened to me last week. I drove up to Portland, ate lunch at Whole Foods, and couldn't wait to try this new vegan aged starch free cheese made with Ingredients: macadamia nuts, almonds, cultures, enzymes, salt. And then after the ingredients list at the bottom it said, contains nuts, soy.

I went from ruling the world, and an awesome week of being totally pain free, to a hot bloated mess within 20 minutes after eating just a little of that damn "cheese" with soy as an ingredient used during processing (likely a soy miso culture). And then my body started aching all over, and the day went from awesome to totally crappy just like that. The pain then lingered the next day too.

It is safe to assume most restaurants cook their foods (ie chicken) in GMO soybean oil, use GMO soybean oil in all of the salad dressings, sauces, etc. 94% of Soybeans in the USA are GMO now, so it is pretty much a given.

So now, it is like I am suffering of a newly developed soy allergy, as pretty quickly after eating, if there is soy someone involved, I feel like hell, bloated, with fibro pain all over my body, and then it creeps up my back and neck.

Otherwise, if it a soy free meal with a little starch, it seems I feel AS pains hours later, or sometimes the next day.

I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Andrea, that is very impressive how you were able to zero in on such a specific "hidden" ingredient that causes you trouble. I know you've said you've been experimenting with diet and elimination for years, it is inspiring to think if I can keep at it eventually I could figure out all my own intolerances, etc.

I did take an ELISA food intolerance test with the aid of a naturopath a few months ago and found that I reacted to nothing but yeast and a very mild reaction to dairy. I haven't been avoiding yeast or dairy outright, I still consume vinegar and starch-free ice cream - will experiment with eliminating those and see what happens.

Thanks again all for your help and confirming my suspicion that starch might trigger pain in a few hours, but if it's instantaneous, there's probably something else going on.

My husband will develop a generally sick feeling within about 15 minutes (or more), and pain hits in an hour. I was perplexed by the rapid rate as well. I was thinking it may well be due to the leaky gut syndrome, because the particles can leak out much sooner than the food hits the large intestine and feeds the kleb. As soon as it hits the small intestine there can be leakage. But I'm just trying to figure it out, I really don't know. Curious what you all think.

Husband diagnosed with AS in '92. Enbrel appx 2011- March 2013 when ER doctor temporarily terminated. Grateful to have finally found Kickas in April 2013 and NSD since May 2013. Since NSD no need to resume Enbrel. Enbrel only helped hip pain, did not touch chest pain. Since NSD, both hip and chest pain have improved. Still takes pain and other pills daily, but far fewer.

MaryL,

You state your husband feels sick within 15 minutes. "Sick" to me sounds like gastrointestinal issues. Have you had him take a colonoscopy yet? He might have Ulcertive Colitis (especially if he takes NSAIDS/Ibuprofen for pain).

Hi Brian,

Gosh I hope not, but that's a good point. I don't think he has had a colonoscopy, but he is turning 50 so will be due anyway. That makes so much sense. Thank you for your help.

I so wish we had found you all when he was even just a bit younger. We never thought to google AS for any other avenues of relief because we never dreamed we weren't getting all the "right" information from his doctor whom he likes and trusts. And who is in fact not adverse to some holistic approaches. But oh well. Trying not to feel resentful of the medical establishment...

Mary

I used to be resentful from the medical establishment and learned holistic isn't right either. It's the combination of the two that will make you healthier.

Right now, for me, it's Humira + low dose naltrexone (LDN) for medical and healthy foods (cooking mostly at home), food exclusions, HCL tablets (helps digest proteins / meats), exercise and the never-ending pursuit of finding my root causes that gets me healthier each day. I started at 10% health (couldn't tie my own shoes), holistic got me up to around 40-50%, adding the LDN + exercise got me to 50-60% and now on the Humira makes me 80-90%.

MaryL - I have gotten sick within 15 minutes of eating before-not gastro, I sometimes get this weird extremely weak and off feeling after I eat. I think it's food allergies and intolerances; I got tested and now that I avoid the foods that I tested positive to, it happens less often. So I think you are right on about Leaky gut.
When I used to cheat with starch/gluten I would get hand pain and stiffness within the hour. Spine and pelvic pain tends to hit me the next morning after being in bed all night it can be worse anyway regardless of what I eat.
I once ate a cupcake made from wheat flour unknowingly- I made some with almond for me and wheat for my sons class. Within the hour I got hit with this sudden depression/doomed feeling then my hands started aching, which made me look back at which cupcake I had grabbed. I am gluten intolerant so I'm guessing it was that and not a starch reaction.

I recommend having food allergy and intolerance testing done. Insurance might cover the allergy tests but won't cover intolerance testing and that usually needs to be done through a functional medicine doc. Gluten intolerance is a separate test and probably not necessary - we should all be avoiding it:)
GAPS diet is another avenue to pinpoint allergies and intolerances and possibly help heal them, but boy is it strict😁 I think Andrea has mentioned it.

Best wishes to all MaryCay
