If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

I am practicing NSD for PAST month and my eye problems and inflammatory pain through the spine has reduced a lot. However, i still see sparks in my eyes. My ophthalmologist says that my retinas are still all right. The pain reappears whenever i cheat a little bit with the diet. I do okay with coconuts, butter, cucumber, eggs, fish, meat, limited amount of paneer and almost all the vegs. Moreover, my body has burnt out almost all the extra fats. However, I think my blood pressure has fallen from normal as i feel dizzy now and then. What can i eat or drink to re-energize myself without going off the NSD? My problem increases if I eat a lot of fruits, milk or dahi. Please suggest some foods.
AS must have damaged my whole spine by now if I haven't googled about it. My rheumies told me AS was incurable! I will write about NSD on my blog too. Thanks a lot to the wonderful people on KickAS.org. I had lost all my hope! But i'm in the process of getting it back!

Hi Palash, Being HLA b27+, and have back ache since last 16 yrs. I have appraoched one Rheumy in India-Pune and he initially suggested me Etoricoxib-90mg. I have the same symptoms of dazzyness, calm throughout the day,.. but it relieved me lot.
You can consult your doc on this (if you have similar desease association like me.)
Thanks!

Hi Valsmum I would be thankful if you can put some of those NSD recipes if you have with you. My symptoms are mostly 75% similar to Palash.

Hi Raj, My NSD : Almost took away the pain A lot of fish. Chicken, Eggs, Coconut, cucumber, Butter(market varieties may contain starch), Spinach, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Sweet Lemon(mosambi), other fruits such as dates( may cause problem sometimes if you have IBS ), berries etc. I believe there are more.
For last 6-7 months I really forgot about AS pain, since then I was on a strict protein based NSD. But for last 2 days a severe Iritis attack is making my life hell. I really don't know what caused this but I think I made some mistake with my NSD as I was trying out a little different tastes and must be something with dairy. Going to visit my opt tomorrow. I think i will get some sulfasalazine too.
Troubled with recurrent Acute Anterior Uveitis and moderate ache in my lower back from 2010-11, HLA-B27 positive. X-ray, and then MRI of SI joints and lower back and there was no sign of Ankylosing Spondylitis except for a bulge near L5-S1. Right now seeing light flashes and lots of floaters now in my left eye and fearing a retina detachment. AS signs found after MRI scan. Started NSD/LSD and received good result. Encountering an Iritis attack just right now.(1st oct , 2013)

Hi all.
I just want to confirm why the starch present in the fruits are not counted when we discussed about NSD.
and apple is too starchy. then also there is recommended that to follow 3 day apple diet.
Please confirm the doubt.

Hi Mahesh, I can't speak for everyone, but I will speak for me. I just try to eat my fruit ripe. I find ripe pears to be starch free. I also enjoy ripe mangos and pineapple. Along with strawberries, grapes, blueberries, raspberries, figs, dates, kiwi, ripe peaches, ripe nectarines, grapes, raisins, cherries, ripe plums... As for apples, I believe it is best when they have been cold stored for a while, where the starches become less and less. I have a friend who has been doing this diet 9 years and sticks to a very strict No Starch Diet, and he gets his apples at Costco (a large wholesale superstore) where they have apples that have been sitting in cold storage for quite a while vs. going right to an apple orchard. The 3 day apple diet is not something I would personally ever do. I found drinking fresh squeeze green juice (veggies, fruits, greens, herbs) to be most beneficial for a "fast" and most of the fiber is discarded, so the juice is quickly digested, give the gut a chance to heal. That is the way I do it! And the way I have seen most get the best results quickly, but not all like this approach either. If you are trying to be as strict as possible try to stick with: grapes, ripe pears, pineapple, dried fruits like figs, dates, even dried apples are usually less starchy. I gave up apples for a whole year because they were always testing starchy for me, but have added them back in and am doing fine, and I no longer test each fruit for starch. Hope that helps! ps: Can you reply with some of your favorite meals on this diet. I am putting together a cookbook for low starch, but don't have any recipes from India yet, and I would love to include some!! Also if you have sesame seeds there an tahini, that is safe to eat. And you can make easy tahini muffins with this recipe that was given to me by BMAN: • 5 table spoons of raw tahini( just 100% sesame, with out any thing else). • 1/2 a tea spoon of baking soda. • 1/4 cup of yoghurt or butter milk( optional). • 2 table spoons of almond flower (optinal). • 1/2 a tea spoon of lemon juice. • 4 drops of stivia ( or any other sweatner). • 1 egg. • a bit of salt. Mix together. Bake in a muffin cup to make 2 muffins or a little dish to make a flatter bread. Bake at 350*F for 10 to 20 minutes, checking often. Baking time varies depending on what you bake it in. Makes 2 muffins. (I didn't add any yogurt or buttermilk, and I didn't even add almond flour and it turned out super yummy! - I just used the tahini, one egg, honey, sea salt, lemon juice and baking powder, and what a pretty muffin!) This makes a great breakfast with a ripe bear and some blueberries. Here is a picture of the muffins I made with this recipe yesterday: http://straightupdiet.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/dsc_07471.jpg
I'm now a KICK AS (and Kick IBD) success story!! After going low starch Paleo to heal my gut, I can now eat nearly all starches, grains & foods without inflammation, flare-ups, or pain. I used a modified SCD diet approach (minus dairy! plus cacao ♥). Cheers to healing & thriving again! I blog at http://www.forestandfauna.com/about/

Hi,
Uveitis is the main symptom of my AS I have managed to lengthen the time between flares through the diet, the learning curve still ongoing. I have two recipes that might help one I have tried and always have ready as it goes great with salad and is a quick snack/meal, the other I came across when looking through my books which I have yet to try so I don't know if it is any good.
The first recipe uses a dehydrator, I haven't tried them using an oven but I think they would work if you can set a very low temperature eg 40degC they may also work at a higher temperature but just cook quicker but I wouldn't go above 140 degC
Onion Bahjis
125g sunflower seeds, soaked 2-4 hours (I use sesame seeds unsoaked) 125ml olive oil 125ml water 1 large carrot chopped 1tbsp medium curry powder 1 deseeded red chilli pepper (I use panch phoron) 1tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 date 1/2tsp salt 500g red onions (I use whatever type I happen to have) Blend the seeds, olive oil and water. I grind the seeds first as my food processor/blender isn’t so good. Add the carrot and blend till smooth. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend.
Finely slice the onions as thin as possible. I use the slicer on my food processor. Mix with the sauce and spread over two dehydrator trays. Dehydrate until crispy approx 18 hours.
Note: I slice my onions in half before slicing I found the mixture difficult to work with if the onion was in rings. Indian spices can be starchy so use what you are happy with. The first time I made I did them exactly as per the original recipe, they tasted very much like onion bahjis to me (though that is coming from and English person). I now tend to make them with sesame seeds as sunflower seeds are more starchy though pre-soaking may make all the difference.
Flatbread Naan substitute (not tried yet)
5 eggs separated 1 cup nut butter 1 cup nut pulp (left from making nut milk) 1/2 cup nut milk (or other liquid) pinch salt 1 tbsp. honey
Mix all the ingredients except egg whites.
Beat egg whites until they form soft peaks. This is best done in a metal bowl that is completely clean (no grease/oil).
Fold the eggs into the other ingredients with a metal spoon. You will loose some of the fluffiness.
Cook them like pancakes.
Let me know if you want to know how to make nut milk and nut butter but I think they BettyRawker (Andrea) might have it covered on her site
NSD almost all the way No dairy hard cheeses occasionally and homemade ghee Still trying to work out what makes me tick and what makes me drop
