If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hello, I am a newbie. My AS seems to be stable, labs are normal, but I have a a severe problem with my left hip. Weight bearing is almost impossible, with severe leg aches, almost like a sore, sick feeling with pain. Then my right leg developed the same escept for the hip pain. Is this a symptom of the AS or something else? Help!!!! My doctor says it is not my AS. susan

Hi Susan,
Welcome to KickAS. Hope you find lots of answers and support here.
Your hip problem sounds miserable - so sorry to hear it. Have you had x-rays of your hips? Otherwise, I wonder how your doctor can be so definitive as to say not AS, when hip pain is common in AS.

Hi Susan- Welcome!
I am sorry about your hip and leg pain- sounds similar to what I have been having. I don't have any suggestions but I will let you know what the doc says- I see the GP tomorrow and rhuemy on the 8th.
I am sure some others will be on and have advice for you. My heating pad helps, as do hot showers and pain meds. That's all I have at the moment. Hugs to you- hope you find some relief! Anna

hi! welcome.
if not AS, what does the doctor say is the problem?
because of my SI, if i try to lay on my side (either side) to sleep, my hips will ache and my SI will get worse, so i sleep on my back.

Hi Susan - Welcome to the KA family. Hip and legs. Well, the hip is prob the lovely SI hip! Pain in which is v. normal AND also normal to have more in one side than the other. Can make walking a pain in the butt, literally! The leg pains could well be shin splints. Pain from which can be 'horribly intolerable' - and maddening when trying to sleep and the pain in one's shins just keeps nagging away. Again, V. AS related. Put in a search for John (Dragon Slayer) "220 AS related 'conditions'". John kindly posted this amazing list a few months ago - June/July? Suggestion: print out list and give to doctor... Welcome to the forum. I understand your pain. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. Did he do x-rays or an MRI of your hips and back?
I hope you get some relief soon.
Blessings. Possi

I was lucky to be diagnosed on early signs, they were very text book symptoms though, Stiffness in morning Relieved symtoms after walking or 1hour after getting up
Blood test came up with HLA-B and eleveated ESR
May be you could try anohter doctor?

Hi there and welcome to KA. Whether or not this is truly hip pain depends on where the pain actually is. If it is at the front of your groin, it is hip pain. If it is at the sides, it's lower back/SI pain. I know that's weird, since we tend to think our hips are the side bits, but really, that's how it works. Also, does the ache in your legs start at the hip pain, or is it lower down in the shins. I get shin splints very easily. Also I have Restless Leg Syndrome, which causes very similar pain to shin splints, a deep down, almost sweet ache that feels as tho it will drive you mad. It is usually worse when I'm over tired. Regardless, did your doctor tell you what he thought it was if it isn't AS? What you describe could very easily be AS, but it could be something else. That said, is he doing anything to help you? Hugs,
Kat

Hi Susan, welcome to the KickAS family!
Early on, my pains were focused in my butt and both hips. They were very sharp pains - sort of a burning, stabbing feeling and when doctors prodded about I nearly throttled them. These pains would frequently move from one side to the other.
I too, am surprised to hear that your doctor would tell you this hip pain has nothing to do with AS. I'm thinking s/he either has a very good reason for telling you this or your doctor knows a lot less about AS than they think they do. If there isn't a good reason for ruling out the AS, based on results from other reliable sources like X-Rays and MRIs as mentioned earlier, I would strongly suggest getting to see someone else.
Personally, I love people who challenge what I believe and are willing to share their thoughts but when someone tries to cloak their own biases and present them as facts, I consider such a person to be dangerous to be around - if this person was my doctor, I would run as fast as I could in the opposite direction.
Good luck with all this and although we are happy to meet you, we are also sorry that you found your way here...hope that makes sense?
Chris
