I really need to loose some weight. At times I'm really good with my diet and then at times, I eat too much and too much unhealthy food. I love chockolate, potato chips, in general sweet stuff and fat stuff. I am 6 foot high and weigh 227 pounds and my doctor recomended that I loose some weight.

So, I really need a virtual kick in the butt to get my act together. Some encouragement from you guys would go a long way..

Hi,
Have you tried reducing/eliminating starch from your diet? It is tough at first, but then I find that the cravings go down dramatically. I suspect I have problems with yeast (I did years ago) and I have found that if I take some oregano oil (I let it sit under my tongue for a minute or two before I swallow it, followed by a glass of water), I am able to get rid of cravings much faster.

Hi,

I loved all the same foods as you, and developed some strategies over the past 2 1/2 years, to help avoid them. Not that I never cheat, but I can stick to diet for the most part now. It takes time to change all those habits, but just be patient, and don't give up, you will give in, but then just right back on your healthier plan.

Following NSD is great for getting your weight (and pain) down. Eliminating ALL sugars (except fruit) as well, will really get you to 100% normal (weight and pain).

So increase your veggies first. I go to the farmers market every week and buy lots of cabbage, brocoli, cauliflower, artichokes, swiss chard, garlic, onions, parsley, etc. Whatever is in season and is not starchy is best. I can even get fresh, local, organic cultured butter with grey sea salt, which is fantastic on steamed veggies and healthy for us. I use coconut oil for sauteing or roasting. Make fermented sauerkraut with the cabbage and eat this with EVERY meal.

Eat all the protein you need as well. NO processed meats, only fresh whole foods prepared yourself. Beef, chicken, pork, salmon, turkey, etc.

Substitute all sweets with fresh fruit. In season, ripe and non starchy (no bananas, apples, citrus for me). I ALWAYS have enough fruit cut and cleaned, enough for a day or two, ready to eat; pineapple and grapes. Clean and cut up fresh a couple of times per week, so they don't get moldy, etc. I keep lots of bosc pears in a bowl on the counter, so they can get very ripe, I use these is a green juice smoothie daily, which is great to satisfy a sweet craving and great for detoxing.

Your safest salty snack would be roasted almonds. You have to prepare them yourself, by blanching and soaking first, to remove starch and impurities, then bake with grey sea salt. Then store them in the freezer. Don't eat unlimited, but in moderation is OK. Try 1/4 cup per day.

I will also grill a bonesless chicken breast in lemon and garlic and grey sea salt, then slice eat, and dip it in guacamole I make myself with avocados and grey sea salt. It's a good substitute for chips and dip.

Today I was bad. Had lots of carbs. I will pay for it. But I will go back to fruits for the rest of the day. I think the problem with starches is they make you more hungry, not less. So I will play on my wii and eat fruits. Protein is also a good way to fill up. You can do it. Like was already said, it takes time to change a lifestyle. Be patient with yourself and don't be to hard on yourself if you slip up. Just compensate when you do slip. You will succeed.

this past summer, my triglycerides were way up and my HDLs keep going down and my BP had gotten to be borderline high. i thought i was eating healthy and for the most part i was, but it turns out i am getting more and more insulin resistant and had to make some key changes.

i didn't lose a lot of weight, but i've slowly lost about 10 lbs over the last year.

exercise has been a big part of it. i don't think i could lose the weight by diet alone, not me, not with my insulin resistance. i started walking or biking 45-60 minutes a day most days. its hard some times, like today i can't because i tweaked my SI yesterday and i have back spasms and therefore muscle fatigue, but once its a little better, i'll be back to walking.

i love love love chocolate. and if i can just not eat it in any given day, that's about 100-200 calories for me.

i try to drink quite a bit of water. if i want something a little different, i have herbal tea with no sweetner, just the natural sweetness of peppermint. or maybe a little plain jasmine green tea (jasmine pearls from teavana is my favorite).

i've reduced carbs severely.

i've started eating nuts regularly. just a serving at a time, weighing them out, because they are very caloric, but very satisfying too.

i've incorporated a lot more fish into my diet.

i try to eat almost no sausage or bacon or anything with a lot of saturated fat, including butter.

and as Jeanie said, as much veggie variety as possible. the more veggies i eat, the fewer other things i eat.

its been slow going, but slowly, slowly........

Good thought about the water. I only drive water and unsweetened fruit juice. Sometimes I'll put a lemon or strawberry in the water. If it is safe to do so for you, I drink about a gallon of water a day. I have dehydration issues. So the more water for me the better.

I have recently started the NSD diet and there is heaps to eat.I was very concerned before i started as I really like food, especially a baguette or chips or cashews were my favourite nuts.I am happy to say that it has not been too difficult. I use cucumber as my "chips" for dipping or my cracker to put a prawn or some tuna salad on. I use Romaine leaves as my bread / wraps . Blueberries, pineapple and yogurt with walnuts for breakfast or eggs, as well as all the other great suggestions here. I am aware that this diet can be high fat if I do not include a fair amount of fish and tofu for my protein.I already used mostly organic products and produce and meat already. Most things like yogurt and mayonaise ,mustard has tested starch free . Now I know to leave the substance that i am testing for a good 30 min to be sure. I was worried about mealtimes and preparing food for the family, tonite I made a pasta dish for the family and I had mushrooms. bok choi, tofu a bit of leftover steak, cucumber and did not even want to try the pasta.

good luck and keep us posted, the hardest part is making the decision, the commitment to your self to start.

I have not tried to reduce starch, no. What I have done before is to reduce (or almost eliminate) sugar, and reduce fat, making it some sort of low calorie diet. Oregano oil, what is that?

Yes, I certainly could incread the amount of wegetables. That is probably the easiest thing... Keeps me from going hungry. Good tip, thanks.
