Beware the McNuggets - scary

So What Really Is In A McDonald's Chicken McNugget?

----------

The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan is a fascinating book that
details the changing eating habits of Americans. I can't recommend it
highly enough. It explains how, over the last 30 years, we have become
a nation that eats vast quantities of corn – much more so than
Mexicans, the original "corn people."

Most folks assume that a chicken nugget is just a piece of fried
chicken, right? Wrong! Did you know, for example, that a McDonald’s
Chicken McNugget is 56% corn?

What else is in a McDonald's Chicken McNugget? Besides corn, and to a
lesser extent, chicken, The Omnivore's Dilemma describes all of the
thirty-eight ingredients that make up a McNugget – one of which I'll
bet you'll never guess. During this part of the book, the author has
just ordered a meal from McDonald’s with his family and taken one of
the flyers available at McDonald’s called "A Full Serving of Nutrition
Facts: Choose the Best Meal for You." These two paragraphs are taken
directly from The Omnivore’s Dilemma:

“The ingredients listed in the flyer suggest a lot of thought goes into
a nugget, that and a lot of corn. Of the thirty-eight ingredients it
takes to make a McNugget, I counted thirteen that can be derived from
corn: the corn-fed chicken itself; modified cornstarch (to bind the
pulverized chicken meat); mono-, tri-, and diglycerides (emulsifiers,
which keep the fats and water from separating); dextrose; lecithin
(another emulsifier); chicken broth (to restore some of the flavor that
processing leeches out); yellow corn flour and more modified cornstarch
(for the batter); cornstarch (a filler); vegetable shortening;
partially hydrogenated corn oil; and citric acid as a preservative. A
couple of other plants take part in the nugget: There's some wheat in
the batter, and on any given day the hydrogenated oil could come from
soybeans, canola, or cotton rather than corn, depending on the market
price and availability.

According to the handout, McNuggets also contain several completely
synthetic ingredients, quasiedible substances that ultimately come not
from a corn or soybean field but form a petroleum refinery or chemical
plant. These chemicals are what make modern processed food possible,
by keeping the organic materials in them from going bad or looking
strange after months in the freezer or on the road. Listed first are
the "leavening agents": sodium aluminum phosphate, mono-calcium
phosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, and calcium lactate. These are
antioxidants added to keep the various animal and vegetable fats
involved in a nugget from turning rancid. Then there are "anti-foaming
agents" like dimethylpolysiloxene, added to the cooking oil to keep the
starches from binding to air molecules, so as to produce foam during
the fry. The problem is evidently grave enough to warrant adding a
toxic chemical to the food: According to the Handbook of Food
Additives, dimethylpolysiloxene is a suspected carcinogen and an
established mutagen, tumorigen, and reproductive effector; it's also
flammable. But perhaps the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken
McNugget is tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, an antioxidant derived
from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or the
inside of the box it comes in to "help preserve freshness." According
to A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane
(i.e. lighter fluid) the FDA allows processors to use sparingly in our
food: It can comprise no more than 0.02 percent of the oil in a
nugget. Which is probably just as well, considering that ingesting a
single gram of TBHQ can cause "nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears,
delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse." Ingesting five grams
of TBHQ can kill.”

Bet you never thought that was in your chicken McNuggets!

Gotta love the forever trusted FDA. Probably the cause of most of the (if i say it, i may be sued) in the last 40years.


Sometimes I think my body is an inflammation nation.

AS for 20 years
HLAb27+, i think there was talk a negative result at later date, but never confirmed.
Have been on many different anti- inflammatory drugs (naproxen to arthrotec to vimovo). Now off all prescription meds except occasional advil or tylenol.
Don't underestimate the power of icing (I bought the biggest ice pack i could find and it is good at numbing pain).

i can't imagine any reason in the world to eat any product served at mcdonalds in the us...although
i will admit to eating at one in paris, a fresh burger on a fresh roll with an aoc real french cheese, served without
the 'obligitory' condiment melange...the french take their foods seriously and allow no franken-corn or mad cow beef.

mcdonalds is not an omnivor's dilemma...what is the dilemma ? it soylent green feed and has no redeeming value at all.

heck even the coca cola is watered down.

I wasnt aware that a mcnugget had ever seen a chicken, or a burger ever seen a cow at any point in its lifetime lol And yet still they fool people into buyin them! Am i so pleased i am vegetarian!

PeacePiper, right on man. Do you know, we even have Splenda being advertised over here on TV - just in the last few weeks. Sheesh. All this toxic muck being foisted on the world. As for the Macs, just the smell, an you know what is in em, muck an rubbish. Yuck. Should be banned not promoted.

Thought, ALL those FDA and pharma boys and quack medics (just the quack ones) plus a few politicoes as well as (!) can be banished to a place somewhere - another planet? - and made to live, eat, drink, take their OWN medecines (all of em) an take all the frightful toxic stuff. Not allowed back until 'reformed'. HaHa.

Hiya Ben - Lived in Paris for a couple of years, never ate a Mac, but did live in Bruxelles for several years and will admit to eating one, once - a chum and her youngster insisted on going to the Mac house. It was soooo horrible. I gagged, even the smell had me in...sick mode

Admit to eating French Fries in downtown Bxls, they were good, but don't eat 'chips' (fries) over here: that frightful *smell, gag!

Macs are made from ALL the rubbish bit of meat, scrapings. Not proper ground beef, or lamb or goat. As for what the poor beasts are fed? In total agreement. No, I don't eat beef, not of any kind - why, even makes the dog throw up, and that's over here in the UK... Don't eat poultry either, all raised on antibiotics and rubbish, why, even poultry bones ground up into poultry meal -

As for Coka-Cola, no way. Full of Aspartame and revolting ingredients. You could not even force me to drink it - not even when I lived in India, when Coke with fresh lime juice and ice was a very popular drink. Tried it once, nooooooo. But fresh nimbu-pani, yummy (fresh squeeze lemon juice. Scrummy.)

Hi Heather - How's life in Boston? Hope you are doing good.

Well the Mac and the burger have both seen their respective meats, but it is the scrapings from the bones, the sinews and ligaments and the rubbish end of the meat. Even to think of it is sick making enough without the resulting smell and offence to one's taste buds. Unadulterated rubbish food I'm afraid. Yes, I hardly eat much by way of meat and certainly NO poultry nor beef. Lamb and pork when I do eat it, and organaic by choice. I do not buy meat for myself from the supermarkets - and in fact hardly even for the dog! Buy from local butcher and from farmer's markets. Named sources.

Was a vegetarian for several years - in India. Respect you.

Hi Lisa - remember eating the corner of one once, it was sooooo frightful that I spat it out. Can't for the life of me see the attraction - adulterating and insulting one's taste-buds and body with such muck (can't term it 'food', it is soooo horrible). Weird.

Am sure that your children will grow out of it < smile >

Doesn't surprise me. But then, my first job was at McDonalds!!

Just as a side note - The Heart & Stroke Foundation, I am told, uses McDonalds food to test how quickly a person's arteries clog.
