Shelli,

I'm just shocked to read this, because You've saved me a post - I'm exactly at the same status! - end of candida month, flare first down then up again, wonderring if I am eating something starchy (and about the same foods!)... Have you been following me...?

I hope nobody will recommend continuing the anti candida diet, because if I don't get sugar soon, I might kill somebody, or maybe just fall asleep for 3 days.

Hi Shelli

My hubby Jon eats cabbage almost daily both raw (coleslaw) and cooked either in a stir-fry or steamed. Both raw and cooked we find it tests negative for starch using iodine.

Many people here don't worry about iodine testing but Jon finds it very helpful. In the past there have been times he has flared up and we couldn't think why because we thought he was eating all "safe" foods. Then we would test something we hadn't bothered to test before and sure enough it would turn black, Jon would eliminate it and his flare would subside within a couple of days.

Keep going on the anti-candida diet for as long as you can handle it. It can take a few months to get rid of the nasty stuff. Jon did it for 6 months and even now (1 year later) he has no white sugar in his diet (or only tiny amounts < 1% such as added to mayo or bacon etc).

All the best
Chelsea

That is amazing! Yes, I've had pain all day today and am basically afraid to eat anything. Tonight I tested raw and lightly steamed broccoli, raw carrot and raw purple cabbage, all of which I think are to be considered starch free, but they all seemed to turn black. I had chopped raw broccoli, carrot and cabbage real fine for a salad. I did go ahead and eat some. I have to eat something.

I do hope we hear from John (Dragonslayer) on this one. I haven't seen him post since he gave us all that info and encouragement back when we started the anti-candida diet.

I'm doing fine without the sugar. I have been starch free since the beginning of April. I think I have been at it long enough that I no longer have the ups and downs in my insulin level. I stay on a pretty even keel with my energy level as long as I eat when I am supposed to.

Keep in touch.

Chelsea:

Thanks for the reply. That's why I'm so confused. I know cabbage should be okay, but I can't figure out why I have such bad days occasionally. I guess I just decided I must be eating something I shouldn't. This morning when I hurt so bad I thought I should test the cabbage that I had last night. I have to say that I put in a really full day yesterday. My pain today could be a result of overdoing yesterday, but it was just shopping and standing for hours in the kitchen getting some prep work done to make packing lunches and meals a little easier (my kids went back to school today).

It seems someone mentioned that until I get rid of the pain--which I haven't--it will be hard to tell when a particular food has caused a flare. Is that true?

Chelsea, please also read my post to Oded. I appreciate your input. Where's John these days? Does he make it a habit of hanging around for a while and then disappearing? He always has some good input also.

Thanks Again!

Shelli - I think I read in a post on the main forum that John was going off to Las Vegas for a few days, that's why he is so quiet.

On the question about cabbage, broccoli etc, the starch content is very small - about 0.1 g/100g - but the iodine test is qualitive, not quantitive. Consequently even minute amounts of starch released by cooking will give a reaction, but you shouldn't worry about it.

Another thing to consider is that things like onion, leek and artichokes contain fructo-oligo-saccharides (FOS), which some cannot digest and could be causing problems. Do a search on FOS to see what has been said in the past.

Shelli,

I am eating broccoli, raw and boiled carrot and boiled purple cabbage daily. I don't think they're bad.
I did feel a slight remission during the last week, that I can relate to two things, possibly;

One is being more strict with the diet - found that turmeric I was using generously as spice (due to anti inflammatory attributes) was turning black on the test. Also quit eating chicken I used to buy every day for lunch (turned out it wasn't clear what was in it).

Second - the only thing maybe that differs me from you (...) is a 7 day antibiotic treatment (I'm on day 6) for H. Pylori, the bug that gives you ulcer, not that I had it. It may have affected the KP as well, not for sure.

Maybe stress had something to do with this slight remission also, because the war that just ended here didn't exactly contribute to my calmness (patriotically, financially, friends fighting...). Now also my clients started calling again

Let's hope we both climb this ladder.
I'm not taking any drugs, are you?

No, I'm not taking any drugs. I avoid them like the plague. Glad to hear you are safe. Where are you in Isreal?

Hey, thanks for that info. I only eat onions about once a week, if that, but I'll do some research on the FOS.

Did you mean that minute amounts of starch are released in the cooking that cause the iodine to turn it black, but that it isn't enough to cause a problem? If all of this is true why do I hurt so bad these past couple of days. Is it just because I am still dealing with the candida and haven't had enough time to heal my lesions?

Tel-Aviv, Dear.

I have no clue as for why still the flare, but we were told to give it some time. Maybe colonies of Kp are still hanging in the blood in diferrent places and will take time to dissapear, I don't know.

Yes, I hang around only for brief periods, since I'm no longer rehabilitating from my operation and the AS does not have me pinned down anymore.

The cabbage is on Carol's list of foods to avoid as a last resort, when cooked: Raw, they should be Ok, but perhaps avoided in the earliest stages. I think that many of us can eat cabbage, but any food that causes this much gas cannot be all that good for us...even if it is not the Kp we are feeding, the bowel stress and stretch might expand those microlesions. Cabbage, kim chee, and sauerkraut don't seem to bother me very much. Broccoli is also a good food that Carol does not react to at all, but can be marginal when cooked.

At some stages, it is food combinations that seem to be as much a problem as the foods themselves. As a rule when eating a marginal food, protein foods, fats and fry oils should be avoided for a couple of hours each way, and especially no nutrient drinks (unclear like protein shakes or smoothies).

In Carol's situation, she found that there were three stages of strictness that she had to progress to, but I think that on average we should be able to consume more marginal foods as the healing progresses.

Hang in there and it will be worth all the efforts and patience; we'll be here with You the whole way,
John
