If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hi AArrgghh what is happening to me! I woke up a couple days ago with sore hands, especially the knuckles, they r painful to move and i cannot grip properly, typing is now proving difficult! At first i wondered if it was repetitive strain from writing cheques at work, i often get that cus of the nerve damage in my right arm, and have to waer a wrist support from time to time. But i really dont think it is this as its in both hands (worse in the right) What really alarmed me is its so much worse today! Is it poss this is AS? or is it poss its psoriatic arthritis? ( as psoriasis has started on my hands again, even tho this is very much out of character, as my psoriasis always clears up after i have had a steriod epidural for a couple months) I am a little worried its bad enough with the rest of the stuff i have goin on without something else starting up. I need my hands to work i am an accounts/payroll clerk! I need to b able to do my job, but today i fear this is goin to prove quite difficult! take care heather

Heather, I suspect it is the arthritis.
I have hand problems too. When my finger began to play up, I thought that I might have fractured it because it was so sore. I must have sounded so foolish when I went to see the doctor because I could not remember any particular incident except that I might have jammed my finger in a car door.
It turned out that it was not a fracture but arthritis. The arthritis started in my right hand first but it has spread into the fingers of my left hand as well.
My solution happens to be that on the bad days I wear my thermoskin fingerless gloves. In that way I can continue to work.
I have worked in the accounts area as well. I am not keen on a job that involves too much in the way of collections work because that will only aggravate problems with my throat, neck and jaw. I am finding that since I have been off work that some of those problems have eased considerably.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life

Hi Thanks for that maggie. i wasnt aware arthritis could start all of a sudden and so painful. It has been a nitemare today every time i have to unscrew lids on things, it hurts and i cant grip properly. And then things got worse, i had to change a light bulb! What should have been a 2 min job took 15 mins!!!!!! Oh and a lot of swearing! What i am really wondering is if its poss to have AS and this prob with the hands, or does it rule out AS and put me at psoriatic arthritis. Up until now my symptoms have been spot on for AS and only odd similarities for psoriatic arthritis. take care hesther

Hey Heather, Sorry to hear that your hands are bothering you. You sure don't need that on top of everything else! I know that my joints in my hands tend to hurt a lot when it rains or when it gets too cold. It can be a pain, since you need your hands for so many things! I hope you feel better and Hang in There!

Heather,
ever heard of undifferentiated mixed connective tissue disease? It could be you are showing indicators in that direction.
From what I have been reading, if you have a dx of undifferentiated, then there could be several outcomes for the progress of any disease.
The other possibility is that you have the peripheral arthritis that goes with the women's version of spondyloarthropathy.
In other words, you have a seronegative arthritis, but your bloods do not give sufficint information for the doctor to give an outright dx. .

Heather
I went from working in 1999 unloading trucks with furniture to being in a wheelchair in 2003/2004. I have days that my hands hurt so bad I can't open a jar or bottle no matter how much I try. AS seems to get all the joints nomatter how big or small they are.

hi thanks john. I have already been told by my pain consultant i will b in a wheelchair within 10years! Not quite sure how he can make this prognosis without proper dx but there u go! He hasnt even seen my med report from a private orthopeadic dr that says:- "Inspection revealed the left shoulder to be held slightly higher than the right and a rather round shouldered round back posture was adopted with reduction in the lumbar lordosis and exaggeration of the thoracic kyphus with a compensatory increase in cervical lordosis, Extension of the cervical spine was a trace. Flexion was half normal range with discomfort at the extremes and worry about provoking dizzuness. Lateral rotation to each side was 7/8th and uninhibited and lateral flexion to each side was 2/3rd normal" I am not saying the above backs up his wheel chair comment tho. Can anyone tell me if this report is indicative of AS? As for opening jars etc, i cant do them at the moment! Its very painful to hold a coffee cup, have now got a straw in it! Bit worried about work today, i need to b able to write on forms that are carboned and i notice yesterday i wasnt able to put enough pressure on to make it copy thru. take care heather

yo, heather, aloha AS is a systemic arthritis...so it's not like this all went south over night...the AS inflammation goes from the SI to whatsoever body part the spondy monster wants to eat next... when i applied for SS, i got to read all my med records for the preceding twelve years (oh JOY); i then made a list of every name and term and looked 'em all up. Arthritis of the shoulder is very, very rare...2/3 to 3/4 of the cases of Arthritis of the Shoulder are found in people who have AS...the others are believe based on sports' injury or hyperextension of shoulder joint. good luck in your quest best aB
