my dad let me try one of his low-dose oxycodones. wow! no pain for most of the day and no drowsiness or wacky head symptoms like i thought. i wonder why my doc has never prescribed this for getting through flares. i know they are addictive. hell, having no pain is very addictive. anyone else use oxycodone?

Hi
No sorry not using it but sure wish i was! (Am struggling with scariolic and thoracic pain at mo) My point regarding addictive is, y not give something like that which can be addictive when they are very happy to hand out 30mg codeine @ 8 a day!, which i believe is just as addctive, i mean its still from the same family of narcotics!!!
take care

Hi,
I used them for awhile. They are very addictive and are known in Canada as the poor man's herion. My stomach couldn't handle them anymore. My doc has now put me on an old drug called talwin. Works so far and no druggy feeling.

Yes I have been using the higher end doses of oxycodone for about 5 years now.

It has worked great for me, I think I have used it so long though that I am going to have to go the next step up.

Yes they can be addictive, but so can coffee, pop & cigarettes...

Not alot of Drs will prescribe high relief drugs

So far I have never had a problem with addiction to any of my pain meds, but I cant speak for anyone else

Will he prescribe ANYTHING?

Mine wont either, he will prescribe hydrocodone but I get my oxycodone from my family Dr. he doesnt want to see me in pain and isnt paranoid about prescribing it.

his excuse is that he is working on relieving my pain by other means and oxycodone would hamper my ability to gauge the pain. i agree with this for mild pain. but pain from major flares need to be dealth with.

I think my response to him would be.....Let me stick a knife in one of your joints and lets see if you want to control your pain by other means...

That is what pain meds are for!!!!

I am a physician with AS. I have had it since age 18 basically. No I am 36. I am a practicing Internal Medicine. I see a lot of arthritis patient as I have a real interest in the disease. I currently have 4 AS patients. One of them has responded real well to low dose Oxycodone on a as needed basis. But ofcourse, depending on you disease state and pain level, you first need to be on what I call your base meds: NSAID + a DMARD (like Methotrexate or low dose Prednisone, etc...) + possible Enbrel or such + and THEN a med like oxycodone for BREAK THROUGH pain. Oxycodone is usually not used for flares as a flare is where you have a lot of INFLAMMATION (an not JUST pain). So you have to use something like a Prednisone tapering dose or a shot in the office, etc... But when used in the right way, meds like oxycodone provide a lot of pain refief and thus imporoves the quality of life for a lot of AS patients. One has to be careful in not using more than one needs as this provides the nidus/foundation for dependence/addiction. Hope this helps!

My father also has AS and he was prescribed Oxycontin. He took it everyday and also percocet for breakthrough pain. After about a year or two he became very addited and ended up abusing it because he had developed such a tolarence to it. We ended up having to put him into rehab and it took him a very long time for him to get pain meds from dr's for his AS and as you all know that is a very hard thing to deal with... no meds. It was a very scary time for him and for my family. I have very strong feelings about Oxycontin, and I think many people take it to lightly, it is not like loratab or percocet. It really is like "poor mans heroin" it is a very addictive drug. And I think that is why so many Drs are hesitant to prescribe it. I wish my dads Dr. had been.
