Curious, How many of us with AS have very low cholesterol levels? If I go on a low fat diet, I can drop my total cholesterol to 110. If I eat like a slob, it only climbs to about 132.

After spending some time on this web site, I wonder if there is a correlate to a mal-abosption function in the gut? I've never read any such correlation in the literature, but with 3500 members we probably have a better experiential data base than any other organization.

So, low cholesterol anyone?

Regards.

Hi, Andy:

The celiac/non-tropical sprue that can result in psoriatic arthritis and AS symptoms can also cause fat malabsorption/underproduction.

Testing for the celiac antigen involves about three different procedures; do not just accept elevated IgA because most people with AS also have this.

Best Regards,
John

According to my blood tests my cholesterol is "very good". Because a high cholesterol count is a bad thing I'm presuming "very good" means on the low side of the normal range. I've always been kind of proud of that actually

Total cholesterol for me was 1300 a year ago. My LDL fluctuates between 375-700 and my hdl cant be calculated. On 4 differendt cholesterol drugs and they dont do much good.

I think the highest my cholesterol level has ever been is about 140. I have read that low cholesterol levels are much more common in breast fed babies because of an enzyme you get that is not present in formula or cows milk. I don't think my low cholesterol is associated with any malabsorption problem because all my vitamin and mineral levels are okay without taking supplements. I worked with a physicians assistant about 6 yrs ago whose cholesterol was always about 70 and his triglyceride was about 25-30 and he seemed to be very healthy otherwise. Merry Christmas.Ottis

Wow, Bob and I thought mine was high. Are you on high dose steroids? That always makes my cholesterol and tryglicerides much higher? As well as hypothyroidism. If I starve myself and exercise 1 1/2 hours daily (back when I was younger and healthier) I could get my in reasonable limits.

Best wishes for a good New Year.
