Hi,

Does anyone suffer much with stiff collar bones? Mine only hurt rarely, but I have had several days of really stiff collar bones (and shoulders for that matter). Getting my clothes off and on is hard, so I have to ask my husband, which is awful, as I'm very independant.

Can you suggest anything to help? Or some stretches I can do?

Thanks in advance

Sadie

I get terrible tenderness and pain in the clavicles and shoulders. To be honest I would like some tips too. Scotty

Hey Sadie,

My hubby had stiff collar bones when he first got AS so I guess it must be all part and parcel of this disease.

And I'm sure your husband doesn't mind helping you take your clothes off.

I get a lot of pain, stiffness, and popping in both clavicles (left worse than right), and sometimes numbness in my arms with reaching up due to the shoulder involvement. Besides the good ol' heating pad/hot shower therapy, I have found two things that help loosen them up (a little):

The first is holding my arms straight out at shoulder level (or as close as they'll get), and making circles with my arms, forward then back.

The other is like "standing push-ups" against the wall, but if you do them facing a corner with one arm on each wall, it's better for working the shoulders loose.

Hope that helps.

My right shoulder is giving me a lotr of trouble the last few weeks. My collar bone gave me trouble even longer that my shoulder. Sometimes i can't touch my collar bone coz its so sore. Not a lot of exercise you can do foryyour collor bone. But moving your arms and shoulders, in excersice does tend to help me. I think you must follow ladyfierce advise, plus, see what works best for you. Maybe there's an exercise that can help you ontop of this one that ladyfierce suggested.

I use very little pain killers and use exercise and sort of "meditation" to ease my pain. Also, gve some of your time to God, it help me cope.

i have shoulder area problems all the time and when im most stiff i pull out this stretchy thing that has two handles. when you twist it the tension goes up and untwisted its super easy to pull. i use it daily the days i feel the most stiff to help get it unstiff. I ain't losin those arms. and on days its super bad, my hubby has to help me and thats ok too. It usually an up and down thing for me. Never know when it's going to hit but since using that band thing regularly it has stayed off the shoulders for awhile.

hope you find a way to help soon..my prayers and thoughts are with you.

Scotty,

Sorry to hear your clavicles and shoulders are so painful. I suppose its easy to find exercises for the shoulders, but the collar bone is difficult.
Hope you find any further posts helpful.

Chelle,

Thanks alot for the exercies. I will try them out today. I hope they help, as I dont want to resort to medication if I can help it.
I'm thinking that my shoulders are probably stiff as a result of the stiff collar bones. I dont usually get the stiffness in both shoulders at the same time....

Take care

Hello there,

Thanks for responding.
I find that my collar bones arent sore to touch; just simply stiff and painful to move. Like you say, I will try out the previous stretches in moderation, and see how it goes. I prefer not to take my medication unless absolutely necessary. Exercises & stretches always make me feel better.

I do hope that your shoulder starts to feel better soon.
