Some of it makes gruesome reading, for instance four pet cats were deliberately shot

Actually, personally I think it is un-wize to have collars on outdoor cats, because of the risk of the collar getting caught on a twig or fence causing injury. The cat should be micro-chipped and/or have an id-number tattooed.

So shooting every collarless cat seems to be a not so good idea.

Man, everytime I turn around...there's another wildlife crisis...and I thought I knew them all from working for WCS...

maybe people should be able to buy contraceptive darts to shoot the cats with, so they wouldn't reproduce...just a thought...non-native introduced species affecting native species is a problem worldwide now...I had no idea feral cats were such a problem in Wisconsin...wow...little songbirds flying from South America just to land in Wisconsin and become lunch for millions of feral cats...but I can't believe shooting cats is the answer...

people expanding into animal territory often results in less protection for the animals...think bison...and now people jog on mountain paths in cougar country...there are ways to coexist though, I hope it all gets worked out...

I am reminded of a story about a guy who came to America and brought with him every bird in Shakespeare's plays...and now the starling is everywhere, successfully multiplying and crowding out native birds...they are everywhere in NYC..I'm pretty sure that's the story, someone check it out, I'll look it up..

KickAS, where wildlife conservationists go for all the late breaking news on feral cats, arroyo toads and Regina gophers!

Most rescue centres and animal charities actively promote trap-neuter-return policies, and will fund this if no-one else to do so. Along with providing low cost/no cost neutering for pet cats, it is the only viable solution.

Take any alleged impact on birds with a big pinch of salt, there was a survey done in the UK which blamed cats big time for disappearing species/reduction in numbers when the actual culprit was significant environmental changes, particularly the loss of hedgerows. (err, hello?!)

Some people just don't/won't see the bigger picture.

The fact that pet cats have been deliberately killed already says it all.

JC, what are you complaining about? It'll give you new scope for images to post! There are beautiful photos at ifaw.org and some them will break your heart - especially the pictures of their work with the 'forgotten victims' of the tsunami - the pets, livestock (read livelihood) and endangered species affected by the disaster.

The gophers have not yet made their appearance here in Regina, but we are avidly awaiting them. Perhaps once the flooded river returns to its banks, they'll be back. Meanwhile, the big, brown dawg is making the most of this gopher-free time and enjoys swimming in the muddy, yicky water.
