If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

STUDY OF OBESE DIABETICS EXPLAINS WHY LOW-CARB DIETS PRODUCE FAST RESULTS According to lead researcher, Guenther Boden, M.D., "When carbohydrates were restricted, study subjects spontaneously reduced their caloric intake to a level appropriate for their height, did not compensate by eating more protein or fat, and lost weight. We concluded that excessive overeating had been fueled by carbohydrates." A while ago, someone suggested that one possible explanation for why NSD / LSD might be helpful to someone with AS is that weight loss generally occured and less pain then accompanied less load bearing. Hi there, losing weight is definitely a factor in some people's pain levels. Did you know that 10lbs of extra weight equates to 150lbs in extra load on the joints? That blew me away when I heard it.
You know, the problem with low carb diets (not necessarily talking about the NSD here) in general is that when people lose the weight, they start eating carbs again and their weight goes back up.
It really is a sticky wicket, isn't it.
Hugs,
Kat

JC, Also that TNF can be expressed readily by fat cells....less fat less TNF expressed? http://www.diabetesincontrol.com/issue199/rosen.shtmlhttp://www.jci.org/cgi/content/full/112/12/1821Taking pressure of the Bowel, many colitis/chron's sufferer report improvements after the prep cleanse etc.... Fasting....maybe it puts you in a fight/flight state....more endomorphs blood changes etc.... there's so many possible answers, but reducing weight if you can can only help! Even carrying an extra couple of kils I'm more sore and stiff David

Hi Jonathan, There are several ways in which low carb diets can work besides Ebringer's Klebsiella theory, we discussed this in het diet forum. The TNF producing fat cells is one of them. We can also see this in extreme long distance runners. I remember an article in Pubmed for instance called something like "TNF levels in extreme long distance runners: how low can you go". Also the blood sugar levels will tend to be higher and more irregular in people with high carbohydrate consumption. The activity of several parts of the immune system is dependant on glucose levels. For instance I myself did some experiments on the activity of neutrophils in media with different glucose concentrations and can say the difference is big. Further out of my own experience I can say that weight loss will indeed be the result of low carb eating, if you want it or not (I didn't want it). The dramatic results I got however in the first weeks of my diet cannot be caused by weight loss as I hadn't started loosing weight yet. Later in the diet there were periods that I didn't feel good but was on the mimimum of my weight. So there is not much of relation for me but I can imagine that in people with overweight to start with there will be some. Best Regards, Gerard

My past experience with various diets ( low starch, low protein, etc.,) --- Initially noticeable decrease in pain, over months ups/down in pain/stiffness ( unreliable), significant drop in weight and increased frustration, no decrease in AS ( ESR high)
Now Iam in complete remission (normal ESR) for several months (thanks to sunlight).
My conclusion with diets: Food pyramid is the best theory at this point in time.
No medicine/device can replace good lifestyle ( yoga/meditation, fresh food, fresh air, good water, normal sunlight, .... ).

David & Gerard, Thanks for the info; the JCI article was very informative. And, Gerard, I certainly would agree that load bearing is only one factor related to pain associated with AS. Best regards, jcwinnie The above is from a recent half-marathon in San Francisco and NOT a picture of Gerard, the lean, mean, running machine.
