If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

I've been doing the NSD for a four months now, well I fell off the wagon a bit due to a combination of stress (making me crave stuff I shouldn't eat) and difficult social situations involving eating out. As a result I'm in a really bad flare, for over two weeks now and nothing helps, I've even tried a 3 day juice fast as other people have suggested it can help. I've just finished the fast and I seem to be in at least as much pain as before..... help! I really can't be in this situation now, I've got my finals coming up and loads of revision to do.... I don't know what to do, my doc is no help and I have wait three months to see a rheumy.

Hi Louisa,
So sorry to hear about your flare -- especially with a tough month coming up. I can relate as I'm working on a masters -- and I'm really going to have my hands full with reading, research and writing in the next 4 - 5 weeks.
Sometimes, I think, a flare just has to play itself out -- but getting back to the diet and sticking to it will help. You'll come out of it eventually. For acute pain, you could take some naproxen or other NSAIDS to help you bear it when needed -- and getting those natural anti-inflammatory supplements might help, too -- like flax seed oil, omega 3 fish oils, glucosamine, sour cherry juice (which I've found is wonderful for peripheral symptoms - like those I get in my toes, heels and wrists). I'm not necessarily suggesting all of them at once, but using some of them might help, at least. I usually take my omega 3's right before bed time with selenium and Vit. E. Also, aloe vera juice for a bit might be helpful to get the stomach mucosa slippery and for healing. Like an ounce three times a day.
I have to admit, I've had a number of small indisrections on the diet lately, and I think the thing that is keeping me from flaring is the supplements I'm taking. I've been regularly drinking almond milks (almonds also are beneficial)with flax seeds and taking my omega 3's. Otherwise, there isn't a real good reason that I'm not flaring at least some -- because normally I have definite reactions whenever I stray from the diet.
Well, I hope this is helpful. I know you're probably on a student budget so I hope you don't feel overwhelmed by my list of supplements -- but you could try one or two perhaps. Of course, you may be already using some -- so maybe you then could add another or two.
Best wishes. Paula

i have started taking turmeric tincture from a herbal shop here, about 13mls of turmeric tincture a day like 5 mls in the morning and the rest at night about an hour before bed and its really really helped my pain. i used to get a really sore back at night, well i havent had a sore back at all for the past week, and thats about how long ive been taking the turmeric. i also take celery and nettle leaf tinctures, but i think the turmeric would help the most, so maybe you could try that. and like paula said, the oils before bed are really important too. i also take bromelain, but its quite expensive to buy, but im sure that helps too. but i always notice that if i eat too late in the day or eat too much later in the day, then my pain levels increase during the night (but i havent had any pain at all cos of the turmeric this last week). anyway, im so sorry youre having trouble there. it's horrible isnt it? i can only remember all too well the times when i couldnt even go for a walk outside, let alone walk from one end of the house to the other without it taking me about 2 hours! i know its easy enough to say, but you just have to keep thinking that it wont last, and soon it'll be all over. just before this last stage of being pain-free for me, my pain was the worst it has been in about a year and i was ready to give up the no starch diet and go back to nsaids. im so glad i didnt! the nsd is a complete lifesaver. it just sometimes takes a while to fully kick-in. keep your chin up cos you'll pull through, and the best of luck with your finals! alicia

Apples can be starchy when out of season as they have not been properly ripened. The best apples are when the apples are cheap. Try testing the apples with iodine ... see here for info: https://www.kickas.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=104465

Hi. My I have been 4 months on NSD too. I have had some improvement, but i think it´s not due to the NSD. The proof is that 15 days ago i stated taking bread and rice again with out any bad reaction. ´ I´m not sure, but i think that there other things that i´m doing that works better for me. It´s suposed that if NSD don´t work for you,may be you have candidiasis, or you could have Kp collonies under the intestinal mucosa, and they don´t need starch to grow.
i have had good results with sulfasalazine (antibiotic), ketoconazole (antifungic), and metronidazole . You should better be under medical control to take this. i´m taking it without it, but i need to experiment to get results. you can post me if you want more info.

yup, if you are taking antibiotics then you are far less likely to react to wheat and other starchy foods

I took azulfadine (enteric coated sulfasalazine... much better med since enteric coating allows more of the med to arrive at intestines where the action is needed). When I was on this med with a NSAID chaser I could eat anything other than wheat products.

thanks guys,
I really appreciate the pointers, I think nsd does work for me as my pain in general is much better than it was (apart from right know). But there might be other factors, I'm going to see my doctor about getting some antibiotics. I have tried omega 3 before and it was helpful but expensive! I'm going to start taking it again though and hopefully find the money. I am a bit better today, it didn't occur to me the apples might be starchy... I'll have to start testing everything.
Cheers Louisa
