If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hi all, i am a newbie here, i have had AS for 12 odd years now, Must say its a real pain in the neck, legs, arms, you name it. have suffered in silence for all these years but have now decided to start doing something about it, due to the fact that it is now starting to interfere with my life. First off i was hopeing someone could advise me as to a good diet, i have heard a good diet can make a small difference in some cases. But i have no idea which foods to miss, and which to eat. if anyone can get me started on my "new" diet i would be most pleased.

Hi Steve, Welcome to KA, a great find for you. Lots of helpful folks here who can relate to having "suffered in silence". There's the NSD (no starch diet) forum that addresses the theory behind the diet and offers info on content of starch, info to help inspire newbies, and a general open forum where you can post your questions. It has been very helpful to many. If you click on the main index, scroll down to the diet center, I'm sure quite a few will jump in to help you out. There is a good feeling about becoming proactive in your own care. Good luck in your search, Klem

In some cases, it makes a huge difference! When I stay away from both grains and dairy and my system is pretty clean, I can feel virtually pain free. As soon as I veer from the diet, pain and stiffness begins to creep in -- here, there and everywhere. It's rad, but worth a try!! Sometimes, it takes a little while, too, to get your system completely cleaned out -- so having some patience particularly in the beginning is important.
Blessings! Paula

A hard diet to stick to, but it does work very well for me. And it didn't just help me with the AS but with other problems such as eczema, fungal infections, etc.. Here are some links to start you off: * The starch content of foods: https://www.kickas.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=146875* AS Food Guide: https://www.kickas.org/asfood.shtml* Recipes and important links (NSD Forum) http://kickas.bctravel.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=19156* NSD QuickStart and tips (NSD Forum) https://www.kickas.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=104465* Diet-Specific Recipes forum https://www.kickas.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=DietRecipies

Diet has made a HUGE difference to me, it truly has given me my life back.
Check out those links Zark posted, keeping reading, start experimenting and keep us posted! Prepare for information overload to start with, there is a steep learning curve intially, but bear with it, because when the diet starts to become second nature you will likely be somewhere you never even dared hoped to be.
All the best to you,
J

Hiya,
Results from diet vary a bit, some do very well, some are helped and some get no improvement.
I'd give it a go though, as it can really reduce the suffering if the diet is effective for you and you can hack the temptations.
There are some other diet issues that seem to effect us as a group gluten, or lactose intolerances. Hence you see people on different or hybrid diets, one of these is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, (SCD), but in my experience you know when you have had the wrong foods it's not something you would miss!
An indicator (which started me own diet in 1988 and since, my son) is a distinctive reaction to pizza within 24-36 hours of eating some, esp large doses, similar after pasta, hot potato chips, too much white bread etc,
Usually a nasty bowel distrurbance or lower spine/SI flare, with peripherals going nuts. If I have really excessed it's a very nasty flare with zinging (now know it is spinal cord irritation) pain running down the thoracic and lumbar spine.
I can't remember the last time I had pizza, where I live there is a gorgeous smelling pizza place around the corner the mouth waters, I get tempted but I just think of the pain, and horror the next 36-48 will hold for me if I give in.
David

yeah similar for me. What happens in me is that my back starts to get inflamed after about 4 hours of eating wheat, and the inflammation continues to increase until 24 hours later - at this point the pain is at it's peak. After that the pain gradually subsides and is almost gone about 2 more days of strict diet control .. by strict diet I mean I try to limit myself to only eating foods I know are safe: tofu, eggs, meat, fruit, greens, ...

There should be a law about banning the smell of pizza. I haven't had a proper pizza in 2.5 years and walking past the pizza shops is sheer torture!!!! But I don't feel as bad as I would were I to give in and eat the darned stuff. Wheat and cow dairy mixed is a hydrogen bomb to my system! Hugs,
Kat
