Hello,

I was wondering. How many here are one of two or more in a family that has AS? I'm the only one in my family and it's still a mystery why and how ppl get AS and no one else in the family don't have it.

Maybe I can see whats the scale of ppl being not the only one having AS in a family.

My brother and one cousin have also been diagnosed with AS. The three of us are all the children of two sisters; none of the children of another sister and one brother have any problems. So I guess my maternal grandparents passed the HLA B27 gene to two of their four children.

'Then you should say what you mean,' the March Hare went on. 'I do,' Alice hastily replied; 'at least - at least I mean what I say - that's the same thing , you know.' 'Not the same thing a bit!' said the Hatter.

I am like you, the only one in family as far as we know. Kind of like being the black sheep!

My dad has AS too, and my sister has Crohn's. We don't know if anyone else of dad's relatives has AS.

Excellent AS Data Collection question

And, no, not to my knowledge has anyone in my birth family been diagnosed with AS.

Best regards,

I was the only one in my family to have AS and crohns until a month ago when my daughter was diagnosed with AS. My guess is that my dad my have had it but was never diagnosed with it.

Hi Wynand,

AS and spondlylarthropathies apparently run in my mother's family. My mother has two brothers with AS and she had an uncle (her mother's brother) with AS. My brother has Reiter's or Reactive Arthritis which is in the same family. My youngest first cousin (there are about 17 of us and I have to wonder how many of us will end up having AS or related diseases) may have Crohn's -- although last time I talked with his sister, she said that they thought it was related to his tour in Iraq. I doubt that -- although perhaps something in the environment there stirred things up. I suspect that he, too, is B27+.

My hunch is that many go undiagnosed or we just don't hear about them -- particularly if it's way back in the family tree.

I'm sorry to read on your profile that your hips are totally fused. My heart touches yours.

Paula
