If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Hi all, I'm going for my first ever rheumy visit this afternoon. I don't even know if the doctor I'm seeing is a "he" or a "she." The visit is in an office full of them! I was wondering: How can you tell if a rheumy is good or not? Does anyone have any tips or pointers? I'd sure appreciate any advice I can get! Thanks a bunch, Andy It only hurts when I laugh. Andy Hi! When you work out if a Rheumy is good or not..let me know too. I'm still pondering that question after 9 years!!! Cheers Irene What lies behind us and what lies before us, are tiny matters compared to what lies within us

Hi, Andy:
Well, you might ask them how many people with AS they have successfully treated, long-term.
Find out which DMARDs they would treat you with.
Ask their opinion about the possibility of pathogenic origins of AS.
And whether, in their sincere prognosis, you can avoid severe kyphosis.
Just for starters.
Good luck John

Hi Andy! So glad your going to see a Rheumy, if they know their stuff you'll be on the right track. I had years finding a good doctor that knew what she was talking about. I think John's advice was excellent and I don't know if I can add anything more to it. There is one thing I have found in my AS travels and that would be, if a doctor doesn't know the answer to your questions but tries to find you another doctor that does, well then, in my mind, that's a good doctor. Ego not interfering Good luck with your visit! peace Kathy "The most beautiful stones have been tossed by the wind and washed by the waters and polished to brilliance by life's strongest storms."

Let me know when you find the answer Andy!! I was real impressed with my Rheumy when he discreetly held my surgical gown closed over my bum when he asked me to bend over and try to touch my toes! It's all a matter of perception I guess! Good luck this afternoon! Maxine May the roof above us never fall in, and the many friends gathered below it never fall out. - Irish Blessing

My advice, is see how comfortable you are talking to the Rhuemy what your problem (communication I think is most important) and listen to see if he is knowledgable about the condition. Mention some of the suggestions from KICKAS and see his or her reaction (this will show that you have some knowledge about the problem too).
I have learn't alot more from this web site and forums than my Rhuemy.
I am about to start the NSD.
Good Luck.

I hope your visit to the rheumy goes well!! My only tip is that I went unprepared and didn't even contemplate the doctor would want to see my spine (no I don't know why I didn't think he would) but when asked to undress to my underwear and put on the white gown that we all no won't have strings to tie up I was left thinking it was a bad day to wear g-strings and being overweight and asked to bend as far as I could down made me think of a large hole to crawl into. Lets just say that it broke the ice and the visit went well, my point being if you are comfortable with what they ask and tell you then maybe you are seeing a good Doctor. If you leave feeling un satisfied then maybe you may want to keep trying! All my luck Sally

Well, Thanks to all for your advice. If anyone is still reading this thread, my visit to the rheumy went pretty well, except that it took over two hours! She seemed fairly knowledgable and has a (small) number of AS patients already, and she didn't seem convinced that I really have AS (just like me!). So, she asked all sorts of questions, checked all sorts of motion/mobility, took blood and is sending me for a full set of spinal, pelvic, hip, sacro x-rays and I'll see her again in about a month. The results are yet to be seen, I guess. Andy It only hurts when I laugh. Too bad I find life so funny...
