Andy, Better late than to drink White Zinfandel!  About 90% of people diagnosed with AS will have a positive HLA-B27. I am in the other 10%, i.e., I have been diagnosed with AS and my HLA-B27 was negative. (I also have a fused neck and sleep apnea.) I am glad that you will be seeing a Rheumie; that is the specialty that treats AS. It is a challenge about the NSAIDS; I would echo John's invitation to the NSD forum. You also may want to check the alternatives and pharmacy forum regarding palliative treatment. I am taking Flexeril or cyclobenzaprine to reduce the pain of muscular spasms after recommendations from people in this forum. It has helped. There also is a newer drug called Neurontin or gabapentin that may, if not contraindicated, help with pain. Lastly, I had a somewhat unusual reaction to a common drug treatment for AS. The drug was sulfasalazine. I believe that it caused me to have pericarditis, e.g., fluid around the heart. You mentioned other physicians; I did not see mention of a cardiologist. If it were my heart, I think I would want a cardiologist's opinion about treatments that I was considering, whether they were allopathic, alternative or complementary. In captivity, lions get AS but it has apparently not been identified in wild creatures. There is probably a very good reason for this.

Jonathan(?), Thanks for the information. I have a lot of learning to do, it seems, and I've only just begun! Like, I have to look up "allopathic" to even know what you're talking about! I have a regular cardio, but I figured I'd discuss things with him after I've seen the rheumy and find out what he says. Regards, Andy

Allopathic doctors are the traditional Medical Doctors (MDs) and osteopathic doctors are Doctors of Osteopathy (DOs). Both may prescribe medication and perform surgery. The difference between the two lies in the philosophy of these divergent branches of medicine. Allopathic medicine has been around for several centuries; osteopathic medicine was founded in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still who focused on treating the whole person and not just the ailment he or she presented.

jcwinnie, Thanks for the education! It's funny, because a good number of years ago, a friend of mine got me to go to his Osteopath, and I found it interesting, but I guess I was a little disturbed because he was doing manipulation as well as everything else. I only went to see him a few times. Maybe I'll have to find out more... Regards, Andy
