Hello guys,
I am 25, very new to this and just found out I have AS. I lift weights very regular and drink protien shakes almost every day for breakfast. These consist of, store bought protien shake powder, skim milk, frozen berries, and penut butter. Up to a couple of days ago when I found out about the evils of strarch I would aslo add a banana.
Is there anything in this mix that will hurt me?
Is there a way of telling the starch content of the protein mix?
Also, are wraps a good alternative to breads and pitas? Or should they be avoided too?
Hi, Merk:
After getting into remission I began to work out again and made the mistake of drinking a protein shake (soya isolate). Of course it gave me a severe flare, and I don't think that anything of this nature is especially good for us. Nothing refined into powders or other things that are nutrient that form large surface areas (colloids). I would not take bananas or anything else starchy (including wraps), and even the milk should be avoided until you are in remission for quite some time. Getting our tract back into shape, we can then tolerate some things that are otherwise provocative.
Best to You, and keep up the exercise,
John

Hi! Have you checked out the Diet Center? There's an "AS Food Guide" which has lists of things to avoid and things that are fine for the non or low starch diets.
Wraps would be made with wheat which definitely has starch. Peanuts are among the starchiest nuts. My hunch is that the protein shake powders have starches as well -- perhaps listed as modified food starch, maltodextrin, etc.
Trying to do the NSD, I mostly eat lean meats, seafood, fruits and veggies and stay away from all processed or grain based foods.
Best wishes! Paula
Thank you to all for your info, it is great to have such a wonderful group of people with so much experience in this matter.
