If you want to use this QR code (Quick Response code) just save the image and paste it where you want. You can even print it and use it that way. Coffee cups, T-Shirts etc would all be good for the QR code.

Is it normal to feel pain immediately after eating something starchy? I have read generally that it takes at least a few hours if not days to get into the intestines, but consistently I find that I sit down to eat, and upon standing have pain if the meal accidentally had some kind of starch. Is it just psychological? Anyone else experience this?

Never immediately for me. It takes a few hours to feel twinges, but the real pain is usually the next day.
AS symptoms started 1991. Official dx in 2006 with HLA-B27+, fused SIJ, bone spurs in back, extreme rib/hip pain, and other family with SpA. Started Enbrel in 2006 with good results, but stopped in 2010 due to nerve damage (MS) from it. Getting good results with no-starch diet since 2011.

Sounds like you have gastrointestinal issues (which is quite common for those with autoimmune issues). I have been diagnosed with Crohn's / UC / IBS and noticed foods don't agree with me right away - especially flours, grains, and breads due to their expansion as they go through your system.

Brian - you're right! I do have UC. However the pain I'm talking about comes on suddenly in my SI joint, sometimes as little as 15 minutes after eating. Is this what you're experiencing?
Btw I have read your detailed blog and your experience seems very similar to mine. It's been extremely useful to read.

Hello Didier,
I am at least 1-3 hours after eating the starch from my experience. Can typically feel it in the low back first.
Do you notice the SI pain at other times... I had issue with SI pains... I had to watch what chairs I sat in and also take stairs one at a time. Curious if you struggle with SI pain if chair you sit in at lunch/dinner an issue... for this it took me 15-30 minutes for my SI pain to kick in.
This is when my AS was worse and before on diet or on azulfadine which was the one medication that really helped me.
Tim

Typically SI joint pains don't happen right away since the autoimmune system hasn't kicked in to start their process (that 1-3 hours mentioned or longer). Please do not take this the wrong way, but do you suffer from anxiety or stress? Or do you do a lot of research on your health? I only ask because it took me almost 1 1/2 years to be humbled by overthinking / stress / anxiety for my issues and I started taking Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) which does some mind altering stuff (mostly for 1 week and then things start to go back to normal) so your body produces it's own pain killers without any additional side effects. LDN might help out this specific issue for you too.

Happened again today. I was pain-free, inflammation-free until lunch time. Then had a big salad at a restaurant - no salad dressing, only potential offender I can imagine was the chicken which seemed somewhat processed. Within about 15 min of consuming, I feel something's off. Not pain but a little twinge in my SIJ. Within about an hour, noticeable SIJ pain as I walk. Just wondering if I'm thinking about this the right way - was it something in the lunch I ate, or was it something the night before, 2 nights before, etc. Is it because I'm so focused on diet, I am triggering this by sheer mental worry? But it always seems to be triggered just after eating. @Dotyisle I suspect it's not related to my chair or sitting because this happens even when I'm eating standing up, at guest's chairs, and doesn't happen after long periods of sitting when I'm not eating @brianzajac I am indeed in a prolonged period of stress/anxiety (going on for several years LDN is an interesting suggestion I haven't had time to research much. Thanks for the guidance! Thanks all for taking the time to share your experiences/responses.

Everyone is different. For me it's about 2-4 hours depending on how much starch...

If I eat something really starchy I flare up really badly almost instantly. I start to get really hot and incredibly irritable and the consequent pain can be instantaneous and excruciating. If I'm having an okay day and am at a 4-5 on the pain scale and eat something quite starchy I can jump to an 8,9,10 literally within minutes. It is horrible.
