Since you asked, I remember the first time like it was yesterday.

During a particularly warm spring in grade 6 or something? I went with a friend to get bottles of RC Cola at lunch time. We laid on the side of a grassy hill looking at the clouds and discussing what we saw in them.

When I said, "OK, we'd better start heading back now or we'll be late" the kid I was with didn't budge. He was a bit of a problem case but he lived in my neighbourhood and I'd known him for a few years. He said, "Let's just not go back"

I was astonished, and started asking questions like you did "Can we do that"?, "What if we get caught"?, "Won't we get in trouble"? etc. He told me he did it all the time and the teachers never called his home. They'd ask the next day and he would make up a lie about not feeling well or something like that.

I envisioned Truant Officers patrolling the streets like I saw in those old "Our Gang" episodes...that kid was right. No one noticed, no one cared, no one ever said a thing.

I think that was when I started to realize that I could make up my own rules.

Chris

Ok...maybe you were a little bit of a rebel???

I am really shocked that the school wouldn't call, I know my high school would have.

It's not like when I say my Da would kill me he would beat me or even spank me, I probly would have been grounded but I think it is more I have never wanted to disapoint my parents and have always had the utmost respect for them.

Of course we have 4 children and the 2 oldest girls are grown and married and they never skipped school. Our daughter Victoria is almost 15 she is being home schooled this year but she never would think of skipping and well, Ethan our 11 year old he has no idea if you said skip..lol he would think that meant NOT going to school but spending the day with Mom (what boys want to do that) my kids ever would have skipped I WOULD have killed them..lol

I guess we really need to hear from Mig, as I remember when I saw her questionaire it was like XXXXXXXXXX...lol

Hugs,

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Yes Lambchoppy LOL. I didn't actually "earn it" earn it, but I wore the badge long enough to feel as if I earned it lol. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary to get the pet name. What is going through your mind? Shame Shame Shame LOL.

Oh as for skipping school. Almost everyone with a car skipped lunch and study hall period (both periods were combined in the middle of the day to make one long period). So I figured, I might as well go to. I usually went out to grab a burger and go buy a music tape or something. I even went home a few times during skipping lunch and studyhall, but my mom never thought nothing of it, since I said it was just lunch and study hall. The study hall during lunch was optional, because we were allowed to study in the library too.

There were other times I skipped school too, but it was much more less frequent, and it was due to being in too much pain to have to keep walking from one end of the school to the other. My grades weren't so good anyways, because the pains interfered.

Are you sure you never skipped school? Well, then again, my sisters never skipped school and they ended up being the smart ones lol.

Take care,
James.

Hi James,

I know, I know..lol me and my dirty mind, just ask Alan..lol (no, not really) it just seems so dog gone cute like your wife would just wanna tweak your cheek or give you a great big kiss..lol

As far as skipping, the rebel in me would love to lie and say I did...but sadly the Mom in me has to tell the truth and say no I did not..lol

And as far as you not being the smart one, I don't believe that for a minute!!!!

Hugs,

Lisa

Are you sure you wanna know, Lisa? Gee, I'm not sure I should tarnish my innocent rep!

Right, well back when I went to high school, the school generally wouldn't call unless you had missed (skipped) more than one class. However, if you missed a class for whatever reason, when you returned to school you were required to sign-in at the front office and present a note signed by a parent or *guardian* <-- this last being the critical bit! A guardian = any family member over the age of 18.

As the youngest of three, I had a brother 4 yrs older and a sis 2 yrs older attending the same school. They taught me all of the tricks. When I was in grade 9, my brother was 18 y/o so if I skipped a class I could, technically, ask him to write me a note. Sounds easy but there was no guarantee he would do it. In grade 10 it was harder but there were ways around the system. However, even with 'excuse' notes, if there were too many absentee days in your file, you ran the risk that the school would call your parents. If that happened and they said 'oh she has 23 odd notes signed by Dad or Mom'... the jig would be up and I would've been in big BIG trouble! I was a bit of a risk-taker. By grade 11, my sis had turned 18 - yay - and skipping was easy peasy. By the time grade 12 rolled around I'd become a master forger. I was particularly good at signing my sister's name... so if the school had called, then she would've been in big big trouble for giving me permission. lol But I knew how many days/classes to stay under the limit of the dreaded phone call. One of the keys to successful skipping was to *appear* innocent when signing-in. If you looked shiFty (the F is for Brad) or nervous, they might call your parents right there on the spot, so you had to look calm cool and bored when in the front office.

Skipping was a wonderful part of my education really. Most of the time, my friends and I would go 'hang out' in the valley behind the school... part of the pretty Rouge River valley. Way more fun than math! I won't say what type of activities we did in the valley lest I totally trash your impression of me forever. I made the mistake of telling Alan... and he has never stopped teasing me...! (note to Alan: shhhhh!)

I find it simply mind-boggling that you never skipped classes Lisa. You REALLY were a good girl, eh?! lol

Hugs!!

Ohhh and I almost forgot - in grade 13, by then considered adults, we were permitted to write our own notes. How easy is that!
