I too lived a wild life, back in the "days of Disco"

Maybe I am paying for it now, but I tend to believe a high fat diet that included a lot of cheese was perhaps the biggest contributing factor to my particular onset

I was 10 years old . . .

my brother was also 10 years old when his AS hit . . . he became a heavy drinker BECAUSE of the AS pain later on, but we were really normal kids before the Monster hit.

I know coconut is not recommended on NSD,

Coconut is most definately allowed on NSD. If you check out the NSD forum, there are alot of recipes using coconut flour.

And also, the link to Zark's blog that you posted to me earlier speaks about coconut flour use in NSD.

Very interesting.....

I once had a blood test for life insurance. They asked me if I drank. I said yes. They told me if I had said no then they would have been concerned, as I had elevated liver functions, which has something to do with a fatty liver. Drinking can temporarily elevated liver fucntions above what is considered the the correct range.

That was about 15 years ago. Of course I continued to drink, but I have aged to the paint where drinking is no longer much fun. It is hard to paint the town when you can't bend your neck.

Megan,

Check out this link from the kickas food guide....

Foods to avoid

Coconut is listed as a food to avoid, yet I have read many article about lauric acid, the main constituent in Coconout Oil having therapeutic properties where the intestines are concerned.

Huh. I've never actually seen that list before. I'm not sure if it's a true NSD diet list though as there are a few on the "may help AS symptoms" list that would react positively to iodine. I've also tested coconut and coconut flour with iodine, and they didn't show any starch, nor do they cause me to flare.

Well the symptoms for me became severe a few years after I left the Army. I also travelled alot and loved a good time. I suppose I drank alot, but I was by no means a hard drinker. If I happened to stay out all night and a beer happened to be in my hand all evening (many different beers) then it was probably a good night. In the Army drinking is a bit of a past time as well. But I was usually too concerned about the mountain bike trip or the race the next day to drink much. I indulged sometimes. But I think the connection to the stomach is really valid.

I had a few free spirited girlfriends who took their free spirit further than I would have liked and as a result I did manage to get Clamidia once (a sure sign your girl has been visiting other guys while you're out ripping it up in the mountains). I also managed to travel through lots of dirty places and suffered countless bouts of diarhea, vomiting and other nasty things.

I think some of us were lucky enough to avoid the disease genetically, but not lucky enough to avoid doing damage to our guts, thus leading to the disease.

Now I have to eat VERY healthy, not just healthy, I have to cut out booze, acids, starches......etc.etc.etc.

fyrfytr,

I am curious, do you eat a lot of cheese/ice cream, or drink a lot of milk???? No I have never been a huge dairy eater, some cheese and ice cream, but never cared for milk.

Do you have a serious coffee habit???? I drink 1 large travel mug of coffee in the mornings or a big glass of iced tea. But mostly I drink alot of water.

Did you ever go on a high protein diet to lose weight???? Nope, at 6'5" and some 300# I have to spell check "diet" to even write it.

At what age did your symptoms become pronounced???? I was dignosed at the ripe old age of 40.

Like alot of people, I partied a fair bit in college, but I've never actually been a heavy drinker. I always found that it affected my blood sugar too badly. I usually hit a point when a little bell would go off in my head and even if I had just had one sip of a drink, I would switch to water for the rest of the night.

Also, I was showing the first signs long before I had my first beer.

I'm with Pete on the best muscle relaxant in the world, by the way, but again, I had AS long before I started using the 'herbal' stuff.

Now coffee is a different story. Still, I was showing signs of AS before I became a coffee drinker, so who knows.

Many hugs,

Kat
