Jan,

I am no stranger to alcohol abuse. I saw a dear family member slowly die from the ravages of that disease. As I have said before, I myself rarely drink. If you read my post again you will see where I wrote, and I quote, "if one DOESN'T have an alcohol problem..." That being said, I feel you took the light spirit (excuse the pun ) of this thread and proceeded to make it into a lecture. You crashed the party Jan. I happen to believe everyone here is responsible and intelligent enough to know the dangers of alcohol abuse. This thread does not advocate alcohol abuse. I think you were well aware that I was responding in a humorous manner. However Jan, The Hair of The Dog That Bit You is an old folk remedy for hangovers. See below.

*******************************************************************************************

E. Cobham Brewer 1810–1897. Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. 1898.

Take a Hair of the Dog that Bit You. After a debauch, take a little wine the next day. Take a cool draught of ale in the morning, after a night’s excess. The advice was given literally in ancient times, “If a dog bites you, put a hair of the dog into the wound,” on the homœopathic principle of “Similia similibus curantur” (like cures like). 1

Hair of The Dog

Folk remedies for hangover
By David Emery
"If you have a hangover — the dry mouth, nausea, dizziness and headache that result from overindulging in alcohol — it's too late to do very much to make yourself feel better. A lot of hangover remedies have been tried, but there's not much evidence they help."
Those aren't my words. They come from the medical professionals at the Mayo Clinic, who also sternly recommend: "The best approach to hangovers is to avoid them by not overimbibing in the first place."
So much for science. With New Year's Eve upon us, it's too late to preach abstinence. Many of us will be in need of heavy-duty relief in the aftermath.
Doctors say rest, plenty of water, and over-the-counter pain medications are the nearest thing you'll find to a hangover "cure." However, folklore being what it is, homespun remedies abound, despite the lack of scientific evidence that any of them really work.
"Hair of the dog that bit you" nostrums have been popular since the time of Shakespeare (before that, say etymologists, the phrase referred quite literally to a cure for dog bites). A Bloody Mary has been touted as the ideal morning-after pick-me-up for ages. There's also an evil-sounding concoction called "Black Velvet," consisting of equal parts of champagne and flat Guinness. Hemingway, it is said, relied on beer and tomato juice.
I have a friend of Mexican descent who swears by menudo (boiled tripe, basically) first thing in the morning. Fatty, high-calorie foods have long been among the most popular homespun hangover cures. I'm told the ancient Romans ate fried canaries. The Greeks, on the other hand, found relief in eating cabbage. Go figure.
Here's a short list of common home remedies reported by members of our Urban Legends and Folklore Forum:
Tomato juice, aspirin and a long, hot shower
Coffee made with tonic water, orange juice and honey
Water, water, and more water
Water and vitamin C (also, water and calcium)
Water and vitamin B complex
Vitamin E
Buttermilk
A "Red-Eye" — whiskey, coffee, Tabasco sauce, a raw egg, pepper and orange juice blended together
Alternating between Pepto-Bismol and water
Lots of icy-cold Coca Cola (not Diet Coke!)
"Coating your stomach" before drinking with milk and/or bread and butter
Vegemite on toast
Vomiting before bedtime

Hey, I like a drink myself (I'm a nurse, it's more or less compulsory )

OMG! Irresistible impules, sounds like lack of control to me, does this mean nurses need to drink in order to perform their duties? hmm...Oh was that a joke Jan? Sorry, I must have misunderstood the laughing face. Duh.

Nurse or not, after what you did/said in April to a couple of our family/members, and I am certain many people have not forgotten even though the thread was pulled. I want you to know that you are the only member here at KA that I DO NOT respect. I can count on one hand how many people have made me feel that way during my life. I realize I am lowering myself to your level by responding to you (haven't since April thread) but this is the only time you will hear from me. You seem to always be looking for a fight and frankly after this I will only view your comments as dribble. I would appreciate it if you never PM (I am aware that you are the queen of nasty PM's) or respond to any of my posts in the future as I will delete without reading, anything coming in from you. I realize you always feel the need to have the last word so rock on!

I would like to to enjoy my time at KA with all the kind, sensitive, honest and brave people here, so please take your condescending and cutting remarks somewhere else, preferably out of KA.

Ahhh, time for a B & T. Bartender, extra ice please! it's going to be a hot one today!

Take care,
Kathy

Let me tell you a little story. There was this very handsome young man who married the most wonderful woman in the world. He had a lovely daughter and a new home and a good job. His life was perfect. Then he started drinking. He lost job after job. He abused his wonderful wife and beautiful daughter. He was in and out of jail. His wife had another child, this time a boy. He grew more and more abusive and violent and finally she left becuse she couldn't stand to see their son abused like their daughter had been. He drank more and more and threatened to kill his wife and children. He lost his house, moved from street to jail and back to street again. He broke down the door at his ex-wife's parents house one day and broke his ex-mother-in-law's arm while ripping the phone out of the wall so she could not call the police. Then his ex-father-in-law shot him, blew a hole right through his chest. But death wasn't even a friend to him. He survived. Maybe the alcohol preserved him. As time went by he started taking his anger out on his own dear mother. And finally one day when she had no money to give him to buy booze, he beat her to death with his own hands. He went to prison for this, but only for manslaughter and was out in a couple of years. For the next many miserable years, he continued to wallow in booze and self-pity and tried every way he could to get the things he had done out of his head. But alcohol didn't even help anymore. One day he called his son (who was now a man) on the phone, begging for forgiveness. His son was very simple in his reply. He said, "Father, if you will give up the booze, I might give you a chance." To this the father simply replied "It is too late for me to do that, son." Indeed, it was, for he died a week later. He was found by the owner of the hole in the wall of an apartment he had been living in. He was all alone except for the empty bottle of booze beside his bed. A few days later he was laid to rest in a pine box in a grave that remains unmarked to this day. In fact, tears of those who had loved him and whom he had betrayed are all that remain on this earth as a testament that he ever even lived.

This is a true story. How do I know? Because this man was my father.

So, Jan, you see I do not need your lectures on the evils of alcohol. So please keep your condescending posts out of my threads!

Johnny

Quelle suprise Kathy!!!

You say you rarely drink, yet you say:

In reply to:

This may sound strange but I have heard (from the expert drinkers) that with a hangover you should avoid coffee, drink lots of water (as Kat suggested), and actually have another drink of whatever you were drinking to get into that state in the first place

I believe this helps the body with the withdrawal.

I also can't stand the sight of it on the morning after but I am keeping it in mind for my next binge.

Well actually there is one drink I can handle in the morning and that is a Bloody Mary.

It appears you can drink ANY kind of alcohol the next day

Whatever you think of me Kathy, which obviously isn't very much, if you were a patient and coming out with statements like that, you'd at the very least be getting referred to the Drug & Alcohol Team, if not an actual Psychiatrist.

Your quoted folk remedies was from when? Probably a time that small boys were sent up chimneys to sweep them?? Hello, earth to earthwoman???

In reply to:

Irresistible impules, sounds like lack of control to me, does this mean nurses need to drink in order to perform their duties?

That is soooo numb!

I think more or less everyone on the planet knows that nurses really know how to party, and it's not on duty it's downtime, and if you're not sure why, try taking to an RN and ask what their normal day entails.

BTW, their normal day does not end with getting ratted.

In reply to:

(I am aware that you are the queen of nasty PM's)

Sorry hun, you seem to be mistaking me with somebody else? (some ppl else?) I've never sent a nasty PM.

Kathy, your post is so very sad in that you've chosen it as a medium to attack me. If you want to attack me, PM me.

What I have said, and what you ignored, hence the initial quotes of this reply was that IT IS TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE TO ADVOCATE THE INGESTION OF ALCOHOL TO REMEDY A HANGOVER!!!!!!!

It's simple, so what's the deal???

You already know I'm a nurse, so you must already suspect that I've seen all aspects of alcohol abuse time and time over.

And also know that whilst there are ppl around thinking getting totalled is OK, and it's OK to get over the hangover with alcohol, then the problem will never be resolved.

I'm not taking about YOU here, I'm talking about what seems to be acceptable behaviour to you and your "expert drinker" friends. It's NOT acceptable Kathy, it's the potential start of a slippery slope.

Ppl I have seen (literally) die from alcohol related problems? NUMEROUS

Ppl I have seen get themselves back from alcohol abuse? FEW

I have a lot of time for ppl with alcohol problems, which is more than I can say for many in my profession. Or for doctors for that matter. Research shows that abusers can change. Got that feedback myself recently, from a patient who knew I gave a sh*t. Recovering alcoholics are few and far between Kathy.

You obviously don't know me very well at all.

But hey - I knew that already.

Take care,

Jan

Kathy, Maxine, most definitely we will sit down to a lovely G&T in Ottawa!! And yes, there must be lime - we have to get our vitamin C in along with our quinine and alcoholic bug killer.

Hugs,

Kat

Johnny,

My post wasn't condescending. As a nurse I know damn well I have a lot of time for ppl with alcohol problems - and know the impact of someone connecting with them can have.

I'm sorry for your father. I'm sorry he lies in an unmarked grave.

I'm sorry that alcoholism is seen as some kind of weakness rather than the disease it truly is.

I'm sorry that no-one round here seems to recognise the fact I'm trying to say the excessive use of alcohol and the use of alcohol to get over it are wrong.

But there's no point attacking me Johnny.

When it comes to alcohol abusers I KNOW I make a difference.

And there's nothing about that you can attack.

Take care,

Jan

How is acting like you know more than everyone else about everything not condescending. Check Webster's for goodness sake.

And, by the way, I did not attack you. I just tried to inform you that you do not know more about alcoholism than I and asked you to keep your condescending posts out of my threads. That includes no-starch ones as well. That is not an attack, but a request.

Johnny,

I DO NOT act like I know more than everyone else about EVERYTHING.

What is Webster's??? If I refer to anything, it is my RN training and subsequent education and experience, which has been predominately in Acute Medicine - hence a lot of experience with alcohol-related conditions as well as alcoholism.

Take care,

Jan
