Hi there...
A Rheumatologist would be able to check for the HLAB27 marker. My family doctor tested me for it first then shipped me to my Rheumy a few years ago.

Welcome aboard! The PENS sounds very interesting. I have used a Tens unit..but on my upper back and shoulder where I flare pretty ugly..it seems to give me more pain and spasms...even on a low setting. I usually end up with the ol' heat and ice rotation routine.

Take care !

1st, Welcome

Next. I'm not sure if its PENS. It is certainly not penis. My acupuncturist uses needles and attaches them to a TENS like unit and lets me"cook" so to speak for about 20 minutes under a heat lamp.

It doesn't assist with areas where I have inflammation but in muscular areas where I have spasms and damage from the inflammation after its through it offers a lot of relief. Best results for me are with my neck and shoulders and some upper spinal areas.

I do this in conjunction with regular massage and at least keep blinding headaches away and unbearble neck spasms as a part of my AS past.

To me the PENS were the hockey team from Pittsburgh.

Hi Drewster, WELCOME!!

I really should keep my mouth shut, since I am just an imposter here (I am not officially diagnosed with anything, and my pain is 'all in my head' ) but to me:

fusion = ankylosing
severe neck pain and stifness = spondylitis

And there you have it....... **drumroll**......"The Magical Ankylosing Spondylitis!"

I believe that both the heel spurs and the carpal tunnel syndrome could be related to AS. I also know that heart conditions can develope as a complementary gift when one does have AS, but I am not sure exactly what that implicates.

My GP took a simple blood test and looked for the HLA-B27 (and I flunked... ), but of course a rheumy could do it too.
You should definetly check out with a rheumatologist. I am surprised you have not been shipped to one already!

See you later,
Jade

I want to thank you all for your warm welcome!

I will be seeking out a local Rheumatologist shortly. I think the other doctors I've seen basically want me to themselves, or something like that, which is probably why I was never sent to a rheumy before...

For those of you with any lingering doubts of the existence of PENS, I submit this URL:
http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/281/9/818 to not only prove its existence, but to get JAMA's decision on its efficacy (at least as far as lower back pain is concerned).

Perhaps I should start a new PENS thread?

l8r,
Andy

Hi Drewster, Welcome!!!!!! I'm another IAIYH (It's All In Your Head) undiagnosed imposter case, as the lovely Jade is also. However, I do have some neck fusion (skull-C1-C2) and some lumbar fusion which the group said will allow me to post here, as long as I don't go begging around for dark chocolate and White Zinfandel.

Enuffa me. Do you have any dark chocolate? Or White Zinfandel???? Bonus points if you have both though......

Oh, no I did it again!!!!

Hey Drewster, just wanted to welcome you to KA! Don't know if the symptoms you describe could be related to AS, but I'm glad you found us. If nothing else, we know what it is to be in pain and you'll get alot of understanding (and laughter) if nothing else.

Hugs,

Kat
